Back to the original article... here's my nitpick with Battier. I love his hustle. I do. And he's a fine player.

But he sorta gets a free ride on his whole nice-guy-ish "Scoring isn't important to me. Winning is important. I don't care about my stats, I care about trophies."

That's a bit of a fallacy. Him scoring and the team winning are not mutually exclusive. In fact, Van Gundy is effectively telling him that if you step up and shoot more, the team has a better chance to win.

In other words, in my mind it's not that Battier chooses "winning over scoring," it's that, well, he's just not capable.

Through his gleaming smile and squeaky-clean charm, Battier is the master of lowering expectations. But how nice would it be if he stepped up, looked for his shot, and grew into the third scoring option?

Anyway, not trying to knock Shane. He's a good guy. And I have no doubt that his hustle, defense, and intelligence has won us some ballgames. But it irks me that his clear weakness--an inability or refusal to assert himself on offense--gets sold as a strength.
