I don't even care that Steve didn't win . . . I had the HARDEST time watching the dunk competition. It was so utterly boring I felt like watching the olympics instead . . . The wheel is a neat idea, but sucks. The cool thing about the dunk competition is the dunking . . . so how come there was so much interviewing, talking, etc. between dunks . . . THAT WAS HORRIBLE AND INCREDIBLY DULL!! I would've just had them do a dunk, show the score, then show another dunk. The way it was done a few years ago was great! Stuff was done quickly, it was fun and cool.
Burn that wheel, what kind of stupid stuff is that. "Turn the wheel and see what kind of dunk you want to mess up with". That was the most stupid dunk contest ever. The point of the dunk contest is to do something new and to show what kind of athletics you got, not about trying to do something that someone else has done. The final should had been Francis vs Richarson. Can not believe I even recorded that stuff.
If I had to grade tonight's show, I would give it a B-. Keep in mind, I said the show, not the dunk contest itself. Things were looking bad for a while, but Kenny's commentary on that last dunk made the entire night : "That dunk has the flu ... that dunk is sick!" Ahh ... I love these precious little gems.
i was playing foosshball and sippin som coors when i saw thata stever franchise dunked its off the backbord. it was nice ,becuase it woulda gone it, but cuttonio threw it wrong i think. but i have to agree with everybody else, these wheels thing is a bad idea, because steve cant palm the balll....hahahaahah even i can palm da ball@
And the winner of the 2002 Slam Dunk contest is .... Dr. J! That's ridiculous having guys now compete against old dunks. I think what the contest has been missing is creativity. At least Stevies first attempt of tapping the glass and was creative. From then on there are all kinds of restrictions that mess the contest up. It's ashame that a group of guys goes out there to compete against each other in the contest and end up having to compete against Dr. J instead.
the dunk competition always sucked. the wheel tried to change things up. IMO the person who got screwed was wallace. the rules kinda got him at the end.
Barkley's funniest comment of the night, on Earl Watson: "Look at his ears! I bet he has no trouble hearing..."
It sucked. I was completely disappointed by the whole thing. I guess in theory, the wheel thing could have seemed like a good idea, but it was a joke. No one can ever copy anyone or anything exactly. Even a lay-up will look different from time to time, imo. I too felt like the whole thing was run by MTV. And now I have to figure out how to tell Lynus how terrible it was. I'm sure he's upset he missed it, but I think I might envy him.
The wheel sucks, because it takes the individual player's talents & creativity away & forces him to do something he's either not capable of, or not comfortable with. I'm assuming, because of Steve's reaction, that the players didn't know about the wheel until they got there. Does anyone know if that's true? By the way, I was hoping that Steve would get the Dr. J dunk from the free throw line. I think he could've done it, assuming he could hang on to the ball.
i wasted a video tape for this crap...ugh...i had better dunk contets in my room when i was a kid with friends and a nerf goal attached to my door...
And another thing, when I heard that All-Star weekend was going to be in Philly, you guys wouldn't believe how much I was hoping Hall and Oates would show up and rock that ****er like a thunderbolt, cause when I think of NBA basketball, the music I think of is Hall and Oates.
They can talk about the revolution of the basketball player, but no one jumped higher than Nique, Jordan and Clyde. Even a young Kersey, Larry Nance and Terrance Stansbury were better than these guys. Does anyone remember Clyd taking off from almost the ft line in a game? Clyde used to go up the ladder off 1 or 2 legs.
Barkley's best comment was: "They know me in South Dakota. I'm the only black person there! When I go there they say, 'he's back y'all!!'"
Maybe they want to show everyone just how bad the dunk contest sucks now, by a) admitting that it's all been done before, so why not do it over, and b) demonstrating to everyone how much better the dunkers of yesteryear were by humiliating this year's contestants. Maybe they want to get rid of it and needed an excuse.
The dunkers today have incredible athleticism but that's it. There's no creativity anymore. Even Jason Richardson's last dunk was stolen from Spudd Webb.
I'm betting the Internet votes were taking a while, although I don't see why that would take any time at all to be honest with you. The results of the Internet voting should be damn-near instantaneous. Maybe they were waiting for sufficient votes to come in.
The dunk contest has sucked every year that Vince-MJ-Nique-Spudd-Dr J have not been in it. It's the players who make the contest. 90% of the dunks these guys do have already been done in prior contests, so I don't mind the wheel. If they are goign to recycle dunks why not make them the greatest ones.
The wheel totally ruined the dunk contest. I'd rather see guys do whatever kind of dunk that they liked instead of having to try and copy impossible dunks. HOW CAN THEY GIVE A 6-3 A 360 STATUE OF LIBERTY DUNK WHEN HE CAN'T EVEN PALM THE BALL!?!? The All-Star Saturday night in general was boring. The only thing that I enjoyed was the 3 point shootout. The wheel is the worst idea and it messed up the dunk contest.
