Slain Rapper's Funeral gets shot up

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- At least one bullet was fired at a church here Friday morning, abruptly ending the funeral service for rap artist Cedric "Lil Ced" Morgan as mourners dove and ran for cover.

"All of a sudden we heard 'bang-bang,' " said Dollye Finney, wife of B.G. Finney, the pastor of Omega Baptist Church, where the service was held. The small building was packed with a few hundred people, and many were standing along the rear.

"I thought someone dropped something. People exited as fast as possible. People knocked over everything trying to get out. We don't know how much damage was done to the church."

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton said he had just entered the church around 10:30 a.m. when he heard one shot.

"It hit the wall outside just a few feet from where I was standing," he said. "It was chaos. People were shouting, 'Gun, get down,' and were diving behind the pews. I made my way to the kitchen with its cinder block walls. I was in there with a woman and her two-month-old baby."

No injuries were reported. It was uncertain if a bullet got inside the church. The front of the building where the gun was fired is made principally of brick.

Police from at least three cities searched the Hayden Avenue area centered around the church looking for the shooter, but no arrests were made. Streets were blocked off for some time and nearby Chambers Elementary School was locked up to prevent anyone from entering, said East Cleveland Police Commander Michael Cardelli.

Morgan, 24, was gunned down outside his E. 142nd Street home in East Cleveland on Feb. 20. Friends said Morgan was not involved in gangs and got along with everyone. Police have made no arrests in that case and have not speculated on a motive.

He performed under the name "Lil Ced." Lyrics of his songs often told of his city's struggles with poverty and violence.

After things quieted down at the church, Morgan's body was taken to a local cemetery and interred.
