Yea, but I wouldn't bring up your (Apollo's) confrontation with Ivan Drago... Seriously, I am appalled by the majority of the responses in this thread. It's called self-discipline, and it sounds like something that hardly any of the people posting in this thread have or had (when they were in college). I guess I'm biased since both of my parents are teachers, but I would not recommend skipping classes unless you are not getting anything out of the lectures, and you know that by skipping, you are not going to miss anything important for the exams.
I found that it actually saved me effort in the long run to go to class every day. Listening to lectures saved me from reading the textbooks. Also almost all of my professors wrote their own exams and by going to class you could get a good feel, (unless they often go off on tangents), for what material they considered important.
Hmmm, Apollo, I wonder what auditorium class you are in now? I have Pol Sci class and as much as I hate that subject, I am going to class and actually payin attention and writing notes. I agree with everybody here, if you can get away with it, then go for it. Judge it from the first test. The only risk you are takin is if that first test is a low grade you cant recover in order to get an overall B or C in the class. Just be cautious.
In my experience, UH professors have been notorious for bribing students to show up for class and punishing those who don't. I've just gotten into the habit of going to class and if I'm bored, working on other stuff.
The benefit of never skipping any classes is that you won't have the dream where you realize it's the last day of class, and you have to take a final in a course you've forgotten to go to all semester. A dream I have had frequently.
Ugh ... I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one. I have one of those dreams at least every couple of months.
Granted, i'm at a smaller university (9,000 students), but every class I've gone to actually going to class is part of the grade... Attendence is worth almost 1/7th of my grade in one of my classes. Good thing I dont have a problem with going to class.
dude, skipping classes is the best! all day drinking, all day sleeping, or skipping class to watch the astros lose a playoff game. nothing better. i think i didnt go to class a whole week in college last year. am i a success yet...no
Go to class. It's so much easier than persuading yourself to read thick, senseless books on subjects when your teacher gives you the notes instead. Of course, I recommend doing both, but for any college students out there you know what I'm talking about, at UT for instance, classes do not take that long. Time flies. Plus, your mom and dad pay good money for you get an education. Do it. As manny said, it's also called responsibility. I'll admit ive missed some classes(mainly a few 8 am ones, because I am a severe night person and just had no choice on times). And just wait until you find a class where you have some assignment every day you will regret missing one day. In my J315 class last fall, we had some quiz every class day, however the alarm i had last year was awful and i often slept through it. Missing even two assignments cost me an A, but a B in the course was not bad. The only other type of a class i skipped was an english class-terrible professor-no notes of substance-only reason to show was for attendance purposes. But all in all, i feel really terrible when i either miss a class, or walk in slightly late, and do really try to avoid those circumstances. College is a lot of fun, so soak it up, but for heaven's sake you can spare max 4-5 hours of your day to go to class and plus you can normally schedule classes that fit your lifestyle. In my case, this fall I have an 11-12 MW(J322D) with a lab from 5-9 pm wednesday, and once we start producing shows I will work some long nights(not a issue), and T-TH I go from 12:30-5 pm, 3 back to back courses(nothing too tough, Sociology, Family Relationships, Chem for NSM). Basically, just go to class, if you arent going to attend, then why are you bothering to go to college in the 1st place.
Ok come on over here by Grampa Rocks and he'll tell you his story. Coming out of high school I NEVER had to study. I graduated from a pretty good private school here in town with an A average, honors, etc. etc. (all that stuff that looks good to college recruiters). I went to a private college in Virginia on an academic ride AND to play football (D3 schools don't have athletic scholarships ). I figured "Hey, cool, I get to play 1500 miles away from the folks", hugh out with the seniors on the team, skipped classes, and never, EVER studied. Long story short, I lost my ride, had to come back here, WORK!!, and pay my own way (parents were big on the tough love thing). After getting my GPA up high enough, I finally got into UH after losing almost 3/4 of a year in credit hours. So now I'm 27, STILL in school (when I can afford it) and all of 4 hours away from my degree finally. So, take it from someone who found out how dangerous skipping college is, go to class. Even if it's from the book, the professor sometimes has a different spin on things or gives hints on what is and isn't important. So, in the immortal words of Van Wilder, "Don't be a fool, stay in school!" Long winded and probably slightly indulgent, but humor me
itd actually be helpful to u to hear the information that u read over again, unless ur one of those ppl who remember things really well the first time. but if ur gonna go to class and just sleep then theres no point.
yep...it was a saturday...it was a final in Old Testament...my parents were packing up my dorm room as I left to go take the final...i literally left the test and headed straight for Houston for the summer...with my MadMax jersey on!
Undergrad...skipped class all the time....had a blast....graduated with a 2.8. Grad school, missed ONE CLASS.....graduated with honors at 3.8. I discovered that if you read before the lecture, then the lecture reinforces the info.....when you finally get around to studying for the test you have covered the info twice already. Plus if you go to class you get to hear that one underachiever in the back ask the prof "Is this going to be on the test?". Ugh.
