It's nice to see that RocketsLegend is still out there fighting for my future, one costume at a time.
So you are complaining that walmart should stock Indian costumes and what else? I mean, shouldn't a business be free to cater to their customers in terms of the products and services they offer? I am not sure what you are complaining about. No one is stopping you from wearing a native american outfit. You can even wear a negro outfit if you like. You will likely offend people but so what? Are you upset that people are offended? What are you losing here? No one has to abide with being sensitive to other cultures. It's your choice. It might make you a douchebag but I would totally defend your right to be one.
I'm complaining about people's oversensitivity to harmless gestures. They'll misinterpret the smallest thing so they can feel offended and publicly shame someone, attaching scarlet letters to them such as racist. It's a poor attitude to have. Is anyone truly harmed by someone wearing a costume? Halloween is a playful holiday where people get to dress up and pretend to be something else. Dressing up as another culture doesn't make someone racist to me, even if the costume perpetuates stereotypes. It can be fun, it can be a joke, it can be offensive. Humor typically is a mixture of those elements. How that person treats those people is my litmus test for racism, not a Halloween costume. Cultural appropriation is ridiculous to me as well. Why do people feel like they and only their race owns specific garments or hairstyles? People have the freedom to dress as they like. And if we want to promote diversity and the cultural mixing pot of America, we should be comfortable sharing our cultures with each other rather than claiming ideas for our race only.
How do you feel about people dressing up as plantation era negroes with black face - would you consider that ok - on Halloween?
Taking it at face value, it's a bit insensitive considering it's a dark period of history, but I can't label them as racists based on that. I'd need more information on their intent and character before resorting to social media justice. FYI, I never agreed with the social media backlash over blackface costumes, either. Most of them seemed like harmless costumes to dress up rather than racist or political statements about black people. They're usually ignorant about the history of blackface, but that ignorance doesn't make someone racist or a douchebag.
Ok well, if you are of the sense that it's ok to dress-up as negroes or make fun of races than I can see your point of view on this. I agree it isn't racist to wear such outfits, but it does deliver the statement that someone who wears this stuff really doesn't care about history or how they are making people feel and probably show at least a tolerance for racism.
