I thought Hakeem couldn't come off the IR until next week. Can someone clarify?

I'm getting the sneaking suspicion this deal is going to fall threw. Remember the initial monster deal with Ewing involved? One small thing and the whole thing fell apart and the pieces just scattered all over the place (in fact we got one of those pieces in Mo). Unless Cato suddenly becomes 100% that monkey wrench isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

If I understood Clutch properly, he said that he didn't know of Cato being in any trades. So, that would leave us without a center, if, let's say Dream was traded.

WE, the Rockets, might be more hesitant to let Dream go, if we were afraid Cato was injured, and not able to play, leaving us only able to utilize Thomas, Rogers, and Collier at the position. Rogers could easily be in the deal too, which would leave us only one true center, which could be scary for the rest of the year, no matter what we got back in return, or reduced in capspace.

I'm back thinking Dream's on his way out somehow... , and maybe Rogers, since he was headed out anyway next year.

    Doc-- you investigated yet? [IMG]

Just pray that there is no monkey wrench here, and it can be done ASAP. We've been fine for two weeks now with no Dream or Cato, so I don't see how it would be too much of a problem to go two more weeks without either again.

You know what? Sign Pig Miller to two 10 day contracts.

Not to diss Hakeem by saying we can replace him with Pig, but if not having an adequate center for a few weeks because Cato is injured prevents us from making a deal for someone like 'Reef or a deal that puts us on the fast track in the C-Webb sweepstakes, then we're waaaaaay overestimating how far this team can go this year.

We may not even making the playoffs -- best case scenario is a first round stomping by the Trailblazers -- so why worry about a few weeks with Mo or Pig at center if we can swing a deal that makes us title contenders several years early?

Of course, that logic only applies if we're talking about a blockbuster deal. And it only applies given that Hakeem wants a trade. I wouldn't be this cold blooded about it if it weren't something that the big guy apparently wants.

Maybe I'm not a true Rockets' fan when I say this (even though I've been watching them since I could), but I want Dream to go. I've grown very weary of his claiming every year that he's in the best shape of his career and then look like he's not even trying out there. If he's complaining about his role on the team, ship his butt out. I'm a Rocket fan first and foremost, a Dream fan second. If he doesn't realize that he's not the same player after years of denial, then it's time for him to go, center or no center.

I am in agreement with RM95 and Francis3. Maybe we should start a coalition again the ultra-Dream loyalists like ZRB and Azim The Dream. Also, before anyone even tries to start labelling us as non-Rockets fans just think about our stance for half a second. We are all about winning rings b/c that is what its all about. Being perfectly content with Dream going has nothing to do with not being a fan of the Rockets, it actually shows loyalty to the team first before any players personal agendas.

I say we make the deal, plug Collier into the lineup & put him on the fast track to learning the position. We're still a young team with a lot of growing to do. Now's the time to put him in. I also think we should cut our losses with Cato & trade him or cut him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Vancouver GM say that we would owe them a #1 pick this year for the Francis trade if we made the playoffs? Is that true?

While I'd love for us to make the playoffs this year, I think everyone realizes that we probably won't get past the first round unless we make a blockbuster trade for someone like Shareef or Garnett & even if we do, there's no guarantee that they will mesh together in time for the playoffs. Trade Dream for some young talent that fills our need positions & let them grow together. One more year won't kill us.

I think we'd have to sign him for the season with the 3rd 10-day contract.

Whatever. The semantics of Pig Miller's future with the Rockets wasn't exactly the point of my post. Sacrificing a few losses now while Cato is on the DL in exchange for a larger payoff in the future was.

Oops ... don't want to leave out Shawn Marion ... [IMG]

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective.

Because he is close to retirement...and is still able to play, it would be to Olajuwon's benefit that he gets a few more opportunities to contribute to another title. At this point, Houston is clearly a few years away from contending. What teams are legitimate contenders who could use Olajuwon's service. Phoenix. Maybe Portland.

It's gotta be Pippy's ghost. Obviously Cato would play a bigger role in the post trade era, and a loss of him hurts. But, as already noted, we've been awhile without Dream and Cato.

What does that mean? One of our other big men is on the way too....Mo Taylor? Kenny Thomas? Carlos Rogers? Jason Collier?
    Didn't Mo "trust" us?

I know what you meant, I was simply stating that we'd have to sign him for the year(if I'm not mistaken) by signing him to a 2nd and 3rd 10-day contract. If that happened then when Cato became healthy again we'd have to release Pig or someone else to make room for Cato.

    What I'm wondering is--

How big can this deal be if Cato's injury (2 weeks only) can place it in jeopardy? Surely if we were dealing with a major player or at least a very contributor, this would not even be an issue.

As far as Dream goes, I think it's best for both parties to let go of one another. Olajuwon is clearly not happy with the situation he's in, but it's not going to change. The Rockets could use the bargaining power they have (last year of contract) to get someone who could make an impact. If not, he'll clear cap space at season's end. On the other hand, Hakeem also has the right to use what he has left in him. A place on the injured list (when he's capable of playing) is not the way to end a career that still has some steam left.

i dont know how accurate the guy at bskball.com is but he is saying the rockets will keep hakeem through the year, and MAYBE sign and trade him in the offseason.

I don't know about the bskball web site. I like it only as late afternoon filler.
Cato's injury can't hold up a deal. I hope. Depends, of course, on the deal. If we're trading Dream and Cato for Shareef and Big Country, well, what does Vancouver care if one or both of our current centers need a few days to rehabilitate something? They need a draft pick that semi-sucks in order to pay off Detroit. Milwaukee's looks to be such a pick.
This 10-day injury thing might make us scramble to fill the void at back-up center, like bringing Washington in to see how he fares (what have we got to lose?)
Part of me hopes that DocRocket started this post as some perverse way to amuse himself.
