not necessarily a fair statement. Hard to know why he signed. Perhaps he needed financial security for himself and/or his family in the near term and couldn't wait either way. Esp. given that he had already been in the minors making nothing for 4+ years when he signed

I dunno... but his results thus far certainly indicate he made the "right" decision.

Agree on him hitting cleanup, and I would guess with Gomez here now and Lowrie back, he won't

I do think that Luhnow is gonna be very careful when it comes to team chemistry though, and Valbuena sure seems to be one of the guys in that tight knit group right now that makes this team have so much fun together.

Carter value is basically nil. DFA

Is Gomez expected to be here and in the lineup tonight?

Yes. Luhnow said last night he will be in the lineup.

Carter and Valbuena are doing that much better defensively and with the bat? Guess they don't want to cut either of them and can't trade them either for something they deem of value.

I thought Singleton was having much better ABs lately, especially compared to Carter, so I am a little disappointed in this.

That being said, I certainly didn't expect Castro heroics last night, which leaves a little hope to be pleasantly surprised by a Carter turnaround for the home stretch.

If not, Gomez better become Beltran 2004 for us, to make up for what we don't get out of 1B.

He probably made the "right" decision regardless of well he plays. He has security for life at the age of 24, if he manages his money properly. He could play like an all-star for 2 years and then get hit by a truck, never play again, and he and his family will still be taken care of. The goal is not always just about maximizing money earned.

Valbuena, yes absolutely is better overall--esp with the versatility to play a quality 3B

But Carter--agree with your latter point. Don't want to cut, can't trade for value, plus the hope (albeit diminishing) that he can heat up given his history

Not sure where to look and see if Carter has any options remaining

What legit reason would Carter not be demoted...

    he's paid more than Jon?
team is still holding hope Cris will breakout?

He is out of options and fits the Valbuena platoon much better.

As bad as Carter has been, and it's been really bad

With Gomez in the lineup, and Lowrie back

If Carter is batting 8th he won't hurt us nearly as much as when we were "counting on him" to be a key cog

true, though you could argue the same about Singleton if you wanted to give him a shot and give up on Carter given the # of chances he's had

Fingers crossed that you are right.

I hope last night's game was an anomaly, because the 4-9 part of our lineup was wretchedly painful to watch. Of course, until the last inning.

    Oh, because he's right handed.
The team must have zero confidence in Lowrie playing 1B.

It's amazing how many butchers we have.
Conger, Tucker, and Gattis all need to play 1B.
    And Carter can't play 1B.

Yes, that is hilarious to see/hear. And man, just a few years ago, we wouldn't have had a DH option :)

In relation to Singleton? Carter has proven that he has the capability to play at the MLB level. Singleton hasn't. That's not necessarily all Singleton's fault (lack of opportunities, etc), but in a win-now mode, Carter at least has done it before and has been better thus far this season (albeit both have been mediocre to very bad). He has a career 0.750 OPS vs Singleton's 0.622.

LOL, then on the flipside... we have 4 CFs, all defensive beasts, plus Correa and Altuve

The defense is feast or famine, just like the offense

In the end, this conundrum of a team might make the postseason and advance.

Sounds eerily similar to another local team which also features a Beard.
