Leaving today to go to Singapore/Malaysia on business for two weeks. We'll be in Singapore the first week and Johor Bahru Malaysia (across the causeway from Singapore) the second week. Any food, nightlife, and sightseeing suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!
Night life in Singapore is rather tame unless you want to pay for prostitutes. Prostitution is legal there. The two main things to do in Singapore is eat and shop. There are are restaurants and malls every where. Food is wonderful there. You can get great food at the food courts and markets. There are also very good western restaurants. Have some chili or black pepper crab and Hainan chicken rice. Those are the specialties in Singapore. In terms of site seeing, go to the night zoo. Golf there is also nice. Malaysia is similar to Singapore except its not as clean. Food is excellent there also. In KL, you can see the Patronis towers.
The new Marina Bay Sands casino is a must-see, the design of it is eccentric, but cool at the same time. Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur is another must-see if you make it up there. As for food, there's plenty to try. Hainan chicken rice, char-sieu (BBQ pork) rice, curry, fish-head noodles etc. Your best bet is to hit up a hawker centre or food court and pick out what you want. Serving sizes are usually big and cheap (less than $5 SGD).
food 1. Hainanese Checiken Rice 2. Chili and Pepper Crabs 3. Local noodles like Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow, Laksa & Mee Goreng sights 1. Singapore Zoo & Night Safari 2. Esplanade & Sentosa 3. Chinatown & Little India 4. Orchard Rd for some high end shopping or Mustafa for a cheaper alternative and indian cuisines Source: 10+ years of living in SG
Jumbo Seafood in the East Coast Seafood Centre (an area with about 8 seafood reastaurants). Get the Black Pepper Crab. When I was living there (I was 16), we ate there quite a bit and I had never had crawfish before and we got them as kind of appetizers to the pepper crab. The things are huge. They're like lobster tails. Of course, not having had them before, I thought that was normal. Imagine my surprise when I moved back to Houston and went to go get some crawfish at the Ragin' Cajun'. I didn't find out until 2 week before I moved back here that Michael Fay had gone to the school I was attending (Singapore American School). But all that stuff happened before I got there. He was caned in 1994 and I lived there in 1996 though I'd visited 2 or 3 time from '94-'95.
I'm from Singapore here, There are quite a few places for nightlife depending what kind of nightlife you like. Quite a few nice pubs/bars in the Clarke Quay area - they have live music and drinks there, I particularly like Timbre's nice pizza, drinks and good live music Dempsey Hill is more upscale but lots of tourists and expats go there. Ann Siang Hill is nice as well. For clubs, the popular ones are Butter Factory and Zouk For food, some of the guys have touched on, the crabs, chicken rice but you should go down to Lau Pa Sat (Its in the CBD) which is quite popular with tourists etc for satay, sambal chilli stingrays and many other food there! And local food like Nasi Lemak, Roti Prata, BaK Kut Teh, Katong Laksa and Fried Prawn Paste chicken should try too. If you are sports fan, you can find generally cheaper stuff at Queensway.
I was in your shoes a couple months ago. I went to Singapore at the beginning of August. The advice in this thread is on point, especially post #6. Really cool country, hope you enjoy your visit. The Singapore airport is really nice and accommodating! Get a subway card (EZ-link) Zouk for nightlife/club Much of Singaporean culture is the food, so try to visit/experiment as much as you can in regards to the different food courts and food.
Orchard Towers, the 4 floors of whores. Even if you don't partake it's fun to feel like a rock star for a while. Always had a great time at top ten.
