I think JVG is one of the top five coaches in the NBA and we're lucky to have him, but once, just once, I would like to see Yao in a triangle offense (which deemphasizes the need for an awesome point guard) and playing a zone defense instead of chasing guards out on the three-point line. You know, just to see if Yao's the problem or JVG's system is not right for him.
Good for Yao! Still, he needs to make his desire for the ball more obvious in games instead of talking about it after the fact. The only that thing bothers me, and probably his teammates, is that he can't handle passes that aren't thrown perfectly to him which is a huge deterrent. It's frustrating as hell b/c if he's pushed even slightly his whole balance is thrown off and poof! another turnover. His strength has definitely improved over the few years he's been here, but it looks like it still has a long ways to go.
He was talking about the second half in the Spurs game, and he was frustrated that he didn't get lots of chance to contribute. You would clearly see that, if someone could put out a translation for that article. I see that as a good thing, because the guy cares, and hates to lose to the Spurs over and over again.
I'm not quite sure that Yao calling out his teammates in the Chinese media is a good thing. It is good for a player to be more vocal on the court, in the huddle, and in the locker room. However, I don't like it when players complain to the media. When you have dirty laundry in a team, it is best to deal with it man-to-man, inside the team. Moreover, by crying to the Chinese media, he is not giving his teammates a fair chance to respond. We are only hearing one side of the story, as it is unlikely that the Chinese reporters will actively seek out the other side of the story.
Very well said. I love Yao but I find it annoying that he is becoming a whinner. I would have more respect for what he has done if he has expressed the anger to JVG and his teammates instead of the media.
Have you seen how they lob him the ball? No one appears to know how to throw the ball into the post. They throw it to the side. IF he is behind the defender, closer to the basket, they havve no idea how to throw it there.

I don't think he is whining at all or demanding the ball per vwiggin’s translation. He is simply questioning what we were all questioning on why his teammates lose him in the second half. WTH??? When Yao is not demanding the ball you guys are saying he's too passive and he should tell the guards to pass to him. Now his doing exactly that and you guys are saying he's whining??? I guess it's all about winning. Had we won the last 2 games you guys would be praising for how Yao is being the leader and not afraid of criticising his teammates. Now because we lost them, you blame him for saying bad about his teammates. Last time I checked, Yao is still shooting over 50% for the season and is the best offensive option in the team.
I would be very wary of the authenticity and exact wording of any articles on Sina. Sina is just a portal and does not have any journalists of its own. It is not a news organization. They don't always get their news from reliable, or even honest, sources. Many of the articles found on there are tabloids and rumors that are very skewed if not completely made up. Yao Ming is a national hero, so any Yao news would generate interest, and therefore, money for Sina and whoever the "journalist" is behind the story. Therefore, I'd read with caution.
but hopefully an american reporter catches wind of this and lets yao's teammates know what was said. regardless of what language it's in, he's finally expressing real disgust with not getting the ball, and i like it! now it's only a matter of this message somehow getting relayed to his teammates, and yao owning up to what he said like a man if confronted by (insert non-post-passing brick laying teammate). I think you said for yourself, those fans want Yao tell the guards to pass to him, not whining to the media. These are not exactly the same thing. I have to say when T-Mac wasn't in the game, almost 80% offense went though Yao indeed. He almost becomes a ball stopper now. He either turn it over or throws a brick. I want to see him becoming the man and carry the team, but quite frankly, he is not there yet and plays pretty bad when he is the focal point.
First of all, everything I'm saying depends on whether this news story is real. Assuming that it is, I think it is bad form for a player to complain to the press, especially foreign press. Nobody likes criticism, but people especially dislike criticism that is said behind their backs. If Yao had exhausted all his options--i.e. made vocal complaints to JVG and his temmates in games and in the locker room--then ok, maybe he has a right to b**** to the press because that is his last resort. And I'm not picking on Yao because I dislike him. Heck, I started out as a YOF. Teammates calling each other out in public can get very ugly and rarely ends well. Trust me, I used to follow the Lakers.
I am glad the big man has spoken (if true), but I am really disappointed that it wasn't to the Chronicle or someone else in the States so his teammates would actually get a hold of it. Seems like Yao thought it was 'safe' to utter his frustrations in front of the Chinese media, but the ballsy thing to do was to either tell it straight to your teammates/coaches or to do a simple 'wave' motion with your hand during games that signal you want the ball. May be Yao has a split personality: one in Chinese (the good, aggressive one), and one in English (the more passive, less critical one). Either way, I am glad he at least spoke his mind and showed some pride, hopefully that will translate into him demanding the dang ball on the court and showing any sign of leadership with McGrady out. I have always said this and I still stand by it: Yao will only become a superstar when he thinks like one and acts like one, or otherwise the likes of DA will continue to ignore him.
Context, context, context, guys. Before you jump to critisize his whinning to foreign press, you have to look at the context and circumstances. The big guy played solid in the first half, and carried the team. Only got chance to shoot once in the entire second half, and we lost to the Spurs, without really threatening their victory. He was frustrated, coz he felt he was in good condition, and felt good touch, but didn't get the ball to contribute. All of a sudden, people blaming him being sensitive became sensitive now? His teammates might not be happy, and nobody likes critism? But if Yao's unhappy, he's just over-sensitive and soft? When you call him p***y you wouldn't mind whether he likes "criticism"? The interview, if it ever occurred, it was after the Spurs game, the guy who played and shot very in the first half, only got one shot in the second, you are telling me that he doens't have a right to complain? Or you are going to say that he never got position in the whole second half? Talking about over-sensitive bunch.
