The flying cars are almost here (link

This is they key. We all know Yao has a great shooting touch. And we should not expect much speed from a guy who is 7' 6" and ~300 pounds. If he were just a 7-footer, that might not be true, but someone of his size is just not capable of much speed.

But Yao is getting pushed around by guys smaller than him, preventing him from getting the positions he wants. He needs to bulk up - not to become a bully player like Shaq, but to get the positions he wants and to prevent himself from being pushed around in the paint.

The idea of Yao spending an entire summer in the USA conditioning and improving is exciting, to say the least.

I like Yao being tough on himself for achievements, looking up for comparison instead of looking down. While, I am slightly bothered by his pessimism. IMHO, Yao's biggest problem is not contioning, not skill, not quickness, it's his confidence his mental toughness. Yao sounded a little down on himself, which translates to low confidence.

Gee, everyone wants Yao to work on different things. From my point of view, if he can spend the summer working on refining his basketball skills, he might finally have a chance to take it to the next level. One thing that I really want him to master is that sky hook by Jabbar.

He won't have to play for China at all? Great news if it's true, but this is the first I've heard of it. Can any one translate the text?

This is one of the reasons I like Yao so much ...

We all forget sometimes what amazing obstacles he faces, coming over to a totally foreign culture. Most all his friends, family, extended family and support structure have been left behind. He deals with a totally different belief system, that he has to figure out too.

He has his Chinese committments, the political/governmental issues, all the fanatical media coverage, and the constant marketing of Yao. And, video games, too ... :)

He'll get better, guys ... give him more time. Yao learns, and keeps improving. He's very smart. It has to make sense to him. But, when it does, look out! No one has done what he is doing, and it'll take him more time to figure it out.

    I believe in Yao.

It is different. Yao shoulders the whole China national team; while amare is only a bench player in the US.

It's possible that he does not need to go to China for this summer. And Yao is thinking about devoting the summer improving his game. He was shocked to see one summer can improve Amare's game so much.

You have to understand Yao has much much more other obligations. Politically, financially, marketing-wise, whatsoever, there are a lot of issues just out of his control.

Amare is only a commen star player of basketball in US, but Yao is beyond this sport. Although it doesn't make him better than amare on the court, it means that he has to make extra efforts to get his time for practice.

Google: How the Chinese Calendar works

The Chinese Calendar runs in cycles of sixty years. Each year is distinguished by two characters, one a Celestial stem signifying one of ten planets or stars, the other a Terrestrial branch representing one of twelve animals. The ten Celestial stems and the twelve Terrestrial branches rotate in a regular sequence and, as the lowest common multiple of ten and twelve is sixty, the cycle recurs every sixty years.

The first cycle started in 2697BC with the reign of Yellow Emperor. So Year 2005 can be calculated as 2697 + 2005 = Year 4702, which is in its 4702 / 60 = 78th cycle.

    4702 % 60 = 22nd in current cycle;
22 % 10 = Celestial Stem 2 (which is called YI in Chinese)
    22 % 12 = Terrestrial Branch 10 (a ****, or You in Chinese)

Therefore Year 2005 is called Year Yi You.

Because most Chinese have lost track of the cycle, another custom was to count the first full calendar year of an emperor's reign as year one, just like the Roman Empire.

So, Year 2005 is also called Communist Hu Year 3.

Need to get your spelling right.

The US team only played 3 weeks before the Olympics. So it is not much time. Unlike Yao who has no idea about summer training and wasted tons of time on errands (promotion and CNT obligations), Amare spent all the other time on systematic training.

Jordan is famous for his off-season regime, that's why Jordan can play at a high level even when he was in his late 30s.

Its nice to see that Yao has high expectations for himself and wants to work harder to improve his game. A summer here in the U.S. should give him the time he needs to improve his game and get a bigger upper body. I also like the fact that he uses Amare as his example...maybe he too dislikes Amare and wants to make sure that he is better than him.

Glad to hear Yao is going focus on improving his game this summer. I think it will improve his game enormously, look at the results of Falsone's training sessions with Yao this summer. His stamina has markedly improved this year and I expect the same with his basketball skills. I hope he stays in the US to do this, there will be less distractions and there is a pool of the best players and coaches in the world that he can utilize here. Playing with Asian scrubs during the summer is never going to let Yao get to the next level.

Well I guess this answers the other thread with the poll on who's fault it is he's not doing better.

How many NBA players are gonna admit they're not where they should be? Kudos to Yao.
