Actually, I can't think of one player taller than 7'4" has ever started for an NBA team and averaged a double double. Not trying to defend Yao but I think the height argument is a "tall tale." Otherwise, Manute Bol is the biggest bust in the NBA.

This is a little bit off topic but did anyone else just see the new yao ming commercial during the suns-spurs game. It's a Garmin GPS commercial. Yao's in a old car out in the country but there's not much to the commercial

not trying to sound rude, but this criticism drives me mad. yao's problem is not the fact that he doesn't average 10+ boards. the problem is yao does not play starter's minutes usually because of foul trouble. if yao is playing 34-35 mpg then he is a 10+ rpg guy. please learn to understand this people.

finally....most great rebounders are between 6'9 and 7'1.

    Robbie,

You might be right. Come to think of it, the best rebounder in the league above 7 feet tall is Kevin Garnett (he's about 7'2" even though he's listed as 6'11"). Maybe those really big bodies just aren't mobile enough to battle for rebounds. But then again, Mutombo is 7'2" and before he fossilized he averaged over 14 rebounds a game. Shaq is 7'1" and was a 12+ rebound a game warrior for years until recently.

Also, somebody posted some comments by JVG a while back that said a lot of Yao's foul trouble comes from poor perimeter defense which allows defenders into the lane where they attack Yao. So I'm not so sure Yao is the source of his foul trouble. Even if he is, he still needs to start snaring more rebounds.

I'm not sure the reporter realized this was probably Yao's sense of humor, and NOT facts to report. Yao uses a wry sense of humor like this all the time ... saying the opposite of what is appropriate.

It's totally revealed in Yao's comments "that the thing that makes Yao the happiest is to not have to deal with the media all the time so he can have some quiet time to relax." (hint, hint)

So, he just threw out things like I'm getting fat, relaxing and waiting, and working on shooting 3 pointers ... Probably the reference to the (old man) Ward working out harder than him was meant to be funny too. Yao knows those are the last priorities on his list, and so should the reporter. The reporter got his leg pulled.

Of course, the reporter could have understood exactly what it meant, took it a bit personal, and reported it as fact to throw it back at Yao.

Yao's probably reading this BBS column and laughing his head off at everyone's serious interaction on his weight and three pointers, and yelling out "get a life people!" ...

man.. I am glad that Yao is practicing three point shoo... wait no, thats stupid:mad: why in the hell is a 7'6" inch center shooting 3's? He should be working on his freaking low post, agility, and ball handling. nothing more, nothing less. Article is bogus, im pretty sure JVG wouldnt allow such a stupid thing to happen...

next year rockets are going to own..:D

Actually this part is true. Ward has been the only other Rocket player that I've seen out there working out. That doesn't mean much, since I don't spend my work day trying to observe the practice and main courts - I actually spend it sitting in a cubicle making phone calls.

But Ward has been working hard too.

He's definately going back - at least for the Basketball Without Borders camp in mid-July.

I don't think it would be wise for me to speculate how much else he's going to be going back and/or staying here though this summer - since I've heard some things both ways - but I have no way of knowing what is true and what is just rumors. I haven't talked to Yao in a while - and he's really the only source I'd trust about his own schedule.

I've been a big critic of Yao, and I've come around to the position that Yao is what Yao is....19 and 9. Relative to other centers, that's great. I'm not sure Amare will pan out in the long run, and Yao will put up those numbers for a very long time...I mean, he can't lose mobility, athleticism, or hops! He can only become more savvy and intelligent, and will probably eventually learn how to negogiate the refs.

Was he worth the number one pick? Maybe. I thought it was a mistake at the time, but I really don't anymore. Players like Amare who don't have a versatile game rarely last longer then 5 years before declining from age and wear/tear and gaining weight.

I expect Yao to be about a 20/10 guy...gets his blocks, shots a high percentage, and all. The areas he really can improve in is defending in the paint, turnovers, and working on his passing game. He's on a Sabonis level now, which was the best I could hope for, so I'm content with that, everything now is just gravy.

Problem with the team isn't Yao or T-mac, it's really the supporting cast.

I doubt he will be jacking up 3's but I think he wants the ability to hit from 15 ft away consistently. If practicing hitting 3's helps him gain that ability, then I am all for it. I don't think Van Gundy would allow his giant to hit 4's in his offence so I wouldn't worry too much. I am more worried about him gaining weight actually. I hope he stays fast and keeps some of the finesse that we saw in his first year as a Rocket. I hope T-mac also goes with him to China as Francis did last Summer.

a slow chubby center taking 3 pointers?

Maybe we are replacing Ewing with Sam Perkins?
