Steve Francis has a theory as to why the Houston Rockets are in a late-season swoon: Coach Jeff Van Gundy makes them nervous. "Our coach is very intense," he told the Houston Chronicle. "Nobody wants to be wrong. That's where you get a lot of mistakes. Everybody is pretty much on edge and anxious, playing not to make a mistake." Van Gundy said that he couldn't guess what Francis meant. "If it was to try to place blame, I deserve some blame," he said. "Coaches are in charge of getting good results."

Anyone remember that famous quote from Steve last season?

With Rockets players believing the good is spliced out of the team's tape reviews to focus on the bad, coach Jeff Van Gundy had 2 1/2 quarters of Saturday's loss to the Spurs screened before Monday's marathon practice.

That could have been considered cruel and unusual punishment. Or another example of showing only bad with nothing good. But a message got through.

Cuttino Mobley was reminded of when he was an obstinate child, ignoring his parents' bedtime orders.

Steve Francis said this has been the most difficult of his five NBA seasons.

"To me, it's worse than last season," Francis said. "It's been such a roller-coaster ride. I'm definitely down for it. I've got my seat belt on. I'm in the front seat of that roller coaster, and I'm going to ride it all the way out."

To look back and gleam wisdom out of what Steve Francis said about JVG is just wierd. Yao may need to go Steve on JVG, and tell him to step off.

Mo needs to introduce JVG to some of his herbs.

Van Grumpy is obviously a deranged mental patient. Isn't this the right time for the NBA to do a psychological health check of all its employees??? The NBA blames players for being mentally unbalanced but what about its coaches?? The Rockets need to assess this coach's mental health.

I read a book about how NFL coach Bill Walsh discovered the small and weak-armed Joe Montana. To boost Joes confidence whenever the Niners were in scoring position, he would take the starter out and put Joe in. He would put Joe in places where he would look good. That boosted Joes confidence. Joe was always a small and weak-armed QB. But he and Bill Walsh won 3 Super Bowls together. :D

I think Mo should make some special brownies for JVG.

For some reason, it struck me funny to see 'Doug Collins' mentioned with Parcells, Riley and Lombardi.

Case: Boost Yao's toughness and confidence

    Resolution: Fire Patrick Ewing
    Hire Moses Malone

We all know what Moses did for Dreams career. Yao should dunk on EVERYONE ...EVERYTIME!

Yao should treat the league like DUNKIN DONUTS!

Yao should take the advice that some old dude once said:

As effective as this strategy works for some people, it is quite ineffective for other people and probably serves to emotionally disconnect the chastised person. I'm not a psychologist. If there is a psychologist on the board, please expand.

This is true. I've taken some management courses and they sure don't talk about negative reinforcement being generally more effective than positive reinforcment.
    .

Remember when we thought we had an edge with players wanting to play for Rudy? Well not anymore. Can that be offset with the players who want to play with Yao and Tracy? Let's hope so.

I also think that with Rudy and Kobe in LA, it is unrealistic to think that we are risking losing Yao with Van Grumpy at the wheel.

I think to some degree Yao does give a S&^t about what his coach says and how he says it. Remember his cultural background is drowned in the concept of respect, from the article summary Yao seems to be going through an internal conflict on how to deal with his coach's comments questioning his personal ability.

Secondly, if Yao is so concerned with money why did he only sue Coca-Cola for $1. He just doesn't come across as the money hungry type that many americans are. Also, doesn't something like half his contract earnings go to the Chinese Government?

Put some in Yao's dumplings while he's at it. Maybe it'll make Yao realize how much a wuss he is.

Tmac acts and plays like him and Mo are getting along real good. lol, must be the eyes.

Very true and well said RikQuik.

This topic is funny..or something... or whatever, because just the other day I had a dream that Yao Ming was sinking in quick sand. We had been walking and talking together beforehand. But he stepped in the quicksand and I leaned over this footbridge he stepped off of, and pull him out, with one hand i might add. I was suprised that i was able to pull a 7'6 350lb Yao out of quicksand with one hand but he looked so helpless as the quicksand was rising up to his neck or he was sinking down to his neck. Well anyways the owner or proprietor of the land comes over and I tear into him about not having a sign that warns people that there is quicksand there and he tells me he didn't feel like paying 5 dollars for a sign. And I woke up pissed off right after that. I remember the dude was pudgy bald headed and wearing suspenders. I didn't know what to make of that dream but now after reading this thread I wonder if Yao Ming feels like he is sinking in quicksand and if that fella that won't pay 5 dollars for the sign to warn him was JVG.

LOL. If I were Yao, I'd go find a beach with a sign next to the "quicksand" spots, or just the beach has no quicksand spots at all.

Is JVG the guy doesn't want to dish out $5 bucks to get a sign when he got paid millinos $$? That cheap b*stard!

I know a lot of you guys hold up Jerry Sloan as an example of a great coach. Guess what? That guy is one of the worst when it comes to reaming out his players.

Pat Riley was lucky that Mourning had to quit because of illness. If not for that, Riley would still be the coach and Heats would still play with Mourning, Grant and Jones and never be able to pass the first round.

Riley had to draft rookies and tolerate rookie mistakes once Mourning was gone because he had no one to turn to. Luckily for him, he drafted Wade. I am sure Wade made tons of mistakes in his first season. In the old days, Riley would sit Wade down immediately after a mistake was made. Riley was famous for not playing rookies.

JVG's growth as a coach would depend on how he can make full use of the players he has including those young players such as Boki and Yao.

Let's just hope JVG can play Boki more and tolerate his mistakes.

Yao's problem is his inability to avoid foul trouble. Once he solves that problem, he will be dominant on the offensive end.

Defensively, Yao will never be as dominant as Dream, JVG has to find a way to minimize his weakness to be exposed, this includes playing with a zone.

Can Yao and JVG adapt to each other? Let's wait and see.

"- In the second half of the game vs LA, Yao was left wide open on the outside. Instead of hitting the open jumper, Yao dribbled a bit and made the lay-up. Yet JVG was not happy with it and said the F-word against Yao."

Yao is playing like a drone and not like himself. He get's in trouble for being aggressive by driving in, yet he is told he needs to be more aggressive. This is not consistent teaching.

This is why all the moves Yao had in the Rudy era is gone.

John Wooden would be a perfect coach for Ming, unfortunately, he is probably too elderly to do it. JVG's dictator approach will prove ineffective with Ming who appears to have a fragile ego. You can be strong with the strong, but not with the "weak." Just because Ming has a massive body does not mean their is a "massive" person inside. Ultimately, he may lack the temperment to play in the NBA which should be renamed "thugs are us."

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If Yao Ming were as weak as you say, he never could have come over from China to play in the NBA. You think he's had an easy life? He's faced obstacles at every turn! Never once has he said, "No, that sounds too hard. I don't wanna do that." You think Yao fears pressure? He had the pressure of an entire nation's hopes on him in the Olympics, and to a lesser degree, in the NBA. Does he back down when it's time to face Shaq, the strongest player in the NBA? Hell no! He gets UP for those games! Yao is a competitor.

I get so tired of people calling Yao emotionally fragile. Yao is a humble man, but not timid or fragile. A fragile person would have long since been broken by everything Yao's been through, yet Yao has excelled and continues to improve.

Yao is starting to learn that if you want to be a superstar, you have to be ready to go to WAR every night. Not in a violent sense, but in the sense that you must NOT accept anything but success. It's tough step, but it's the next logical step in his development. Some players, like Hakeem and Larry Bird, were born with that instinct. Others, like Kevin Garnett, have to develop that extreme desire, that force of will. It's pathetic how many of Yao's fans don't think he's tough enough to handle it. Anyone who thinks Yao is mentally weak hasn't followed his career very closely.
