Just a few songs from them. These are a little slower than some of their other songs.

And here is a band I saw a few weeks ago in Austin.

It's funny you said this because I clicked on the thread because I thought there was some sort of necro-bump. I absolutely LOVED SSP...about 12 years ago. I do think their sound is cleaner than Smashing Pumpkins and having seen SP live, I have to say that SSP has to be better live than Corrigan's terrible voice.

People are passionate about music and think that anything that came out in their formative years is 'the BEST'. Essentially, it's art and it's all in the eye of the beholder.

But I have a hard time understanding this. People refuse to try new music once they're 'old'. You don't see this with visual media. You never hear 'Hey, did you see the latest Game of Thrones?' 'Nah, man, original Dukes of Hazzard is where it's at. Best TV era ever, I could watch it forever. New shows suck.'

Moral of the story- try new ****. You don't have to seek it out and take time out of your trick mortgage knee- get a free Pandora account and let the music genome project take you on a ride.

Now I'm off to listen to some Silver Sun Pickups, 'cause I've been waiting for this moment, all my life.

I def agree newer bands could have a harder time, but bands from the 70s/80s/90s seem to be doing just fine living like rockstars. As you mentioned about older music, these actual established bands are still making a killing hosting concerts and on merch, just look at iron maiden, Metallica, GNR, depeche mode, nin, hell even Korn. They're not getting paid like they used to from the record labels (but were they ever?, execs sure were though), but they're getting paid better than ever doing shows. I mean some of the top bands makes millions in a night on one show.

Just crazy money for live performances and merch. What sucks is the price now though... Damn shirts cost like $50 and good seats. . Can cost a lot vs the old days.

Regardless though I def agree some newer bands could have it a bit difficult if they're not in the current popular genre (and not established etc.) I mean the same thing could be said about network TV due to young audiences not even watching TV outside of Netflix./youtube

I think there's something about being older and having stood against the test of time. Older bands will always be older and have stood up to more changes in style and times and what all else. So there's a kind of stamp that a newer band just can't possibly earn. Even your title is kind of..."which one of these is not like the others" territory. Then there's how we've seen so many genres and sub-genres rise and fall, to be quite honest I absolutely LOATHE over-qualifying bands, but everything got so specific I think it kind of ruined the more general genres labels. A rock band can't just be a rock band. If you got famous for a heavy song you can't play a ballad anymore. Stuff like that, I think the marketing angles got really specific and kind of made it impossible for a band to really be diverse, such as Pink Floyd or any number of the older, diverse, amazing bands.

Don't even get me started on streaming-music services. Killing one dream at a time....

I don't consider myself old but I am a GnXer and still find new bands I follow, and every now and then I find one that absolutely blows my mind and it makes my day/week/month. I was reading a thread on another forum making fun of GVF's Hobbit performance on SNL a few weeks back about how Rolling Stone and others gush over them, but they are IMO, pure "wanna be" Led Zep cover band trash. I was even embarrassed to watch as I've seen bar bands better than that ****. Then, while talking about new bands someone gave me this link, as the "old style" is now the "new style again" or some ****...the never ending cycle of "comebacks"-

Mind was blown. Incredible talent. Incredible sounds. Literally sounds something like a mix of the Allman Brothers and Black Sabbath. This album has been on play non stop for weeks, so yes, On the wireless while cleaning the pool, in the kitchen on the Echo, in my car and at work...so if you look, there is still good stuff out there all around. If you're willing to put even a minimum amount of personal time in to search and listen it's not hard to find. Radio is just not a thing anymore. Radio made bands big by playing some songs over and over and over (Freebird much). Now with Sirius, streaming, Youtube, Apple Music...big radio is dead, but there are so many other opportunities to find great music like never before.

The one thing I think helped kill actual rock was the invention of pro tools. Now everyone can learn to use it without learning how to play an actual instrument or be something original. Now if one person or band gets big, you have dozens of copycats who do the same thing and ruin it. Autotune is another unfortunate invention. That crap is pure garbage. Learn to use pro tools and autotune, put it up on Youtube and you can be a STAR! It's disgusting to me.

As for Silver Sun Pickups, lol...flashback a decade ago, damn man, I used to LOVE that band. I saw them open for Muse and they were great and actually showed up very early just to see them perform, then saw them live twice on their own They were one of my favorite bands for about a year or 2, but just couldn't keep my attention as they don't seem to change up their sound much, but I still love Checkered Floor, Future Foe Scenarios, Rusted Wheel and Dream at Tempo 119.

A lot of these kids now. I tell you.

They don’t care about albums or good bands or rockstars. The influence is just gone and it is hard to accept now.

Another thing is a lot of these kids don’t get the love or freedom of getting a car as a teenager and everything that’s comes with it.

Dating had even been dumb downed. Now it is an Couple texts followed by dry anal sex and shaking hands.

I tell you, they are missing out on a lot.

@Ziggy is a big fan of this btw, and he's our age. He prefers fist bumps though to shaking the guys' hand.

I get it. I really didn't mean this thread (you can post whatever you want lol) about youth. More about the phenomenon itself. I just find it interesting.

Tough topic. As an older guy, I enjoy threads like this one, the "what are you listening to..." thread, or the "synthwave" thread that introduce me to new stuff that I would not encounter on my own. The problem I have is hearing/seeing a video here that interests me and then Spotifying the "album" and finding out the only good song was the one I heard here. The rest might be crap. No sustained excellence.

That kind of staying power used to be required during the heyday of the "music industry" before it collapsed under its own weight. It's just not necessary anymore in the current age of instant stardom that can be attained by going viral.

Honestly, this is what sells me on Pandora vs Spotify (or some other service). The music genome project matches the song to different, but similar sounding songs. You get on this train of good music and discover a new band. Then you spin that off, etc.

Agreed. I use both and like Pandora for the very reason you mentioned. I like Spotify because if I hear a song I like, on Pandora or here, I want to explore their catalog, not just a string of similar singles.

Saw Silversun Pickups open for Muse years back. Great show. I'm 51........love the old stuff. It's stupid to how much Pink Floyd I listen to today. But if I'm around sirius, I've almost always got it on Alt nation. There's plenty of good music being made today. And there's lots of great classic stuff too.

It's well known that artists like Drake and (insert pop star here) use streaming farms to inflate play numbers. Literally rooms with thousands of cell phones all playing their songs on repeat. There are videos of it.

We need to go back to what’s important in this thread.

Siamese Dream in my opinion is the GOAT album. Weakest song, Sweet Sweet, is still decent.

Swoon was a fantastic album. I was a little bummed their next few albums weren’t nearly as good. Similar to SD it was solid the entire way through. No secrets this year and catch and release are my favorite tracks.

Super stoked about their next album because Butch Vig will be producing it...who produced.... you guessed it! Siamese Dream.

Agree on all accounts. Siamese Dream is godly. Like the first two Silversun albums but I felt like they got too electronic oriented on the last two albums.

2nd greatest album of the 90's IMO. I still listen to it all the time, from start to finish. LOVE Corgan's guitar sounds on this album.

Only 90's album I'd put above it is:

Weezer is my second favorite 90s band. Blue album is fun as hell.

    Completely different moods lol.

For me that’s like comparing fish tacos and pizza. I understand most people would say they enjoy pizza more (weezer) but fish tacos (SP) is my favorite dammit.

This is exactly what I do. Since I have Google Play Music, I go and look for bands or albums that I always wanted to listen to but never purchased. For example, recently I discovered that I actually really enjoy the Smiths, and had never listened to them before except from downloading How Soon is Now? over 15 yrs ago on Kazaa/Limewire in my dorm room.

A couple years ago a discovered a band called Starfkr and really like listening to few of their albums. This is all because of streaming music. I absolutely love it
