I had a Sikh friend when I was studying in Houston - he was very religious, had never cut his hair in his life, Turban, etc., but he wasn't openly wearing a knife.

Well, I do not no anything about these daggers, as I assume the amtrak people do not as well. So in that case my first assumption would be to lean on the safe side and not allow a dagger, dulled or not, on the train. Personally, a reasonably large metal object will always be a cause for concern.

basically I think what da1 is implying is that he thinks Amtrak was racist because they were too dumb to realize that a Sikh is different than a Muslim terrorist.

When in actuality, Amtrak was more likely trying to enforce a policy of protecting its passengers by not allowing a knife on board.

so basically da1 is trying to insert the race card here to drum up sympathy for Sikhs.

Just siding with the person making a point, albeit different than mine, and not the one taking a personal attack.

Wrong and unnecessarily vitriolic. Also, private and public facilities restrict gun carriage all the time. Just an empty shoebox of an argument.

AAdult males sikhs are required by the religion to carry the kirpan on their person at all times. It is supposed to symbolize being always ready to protect people in need, or something. They have other symbolic stuff that they have to carry at all times, like a comb and some other things.

I don't know what they do when they have to go to the courthouse, or similar.

They can't have it on a flight. They have to live with that, too. Security concerns of others trump whatever someone says their religion tells them to do.

I admit I don't know much about this part of the Sikh religion. I've seen those daggers before but haven't noticed Sikh friends of mine carrying them with them all the time.

It seems like if the religion makes enough allowance to check in the dagger on flights then I don't see why it couldn't make an allowance to not carry them onto other situations like a train. That said perhaps a compromise of first showing the staff the dagger is dulled and then temporarily sealing the sheath with duct tape or something else could be worked out.

Your choice is asinine. How about being for the law that we all follow?

In Texas that is an illegal knife, you cannot carry it. I am shocked it flies in California.

He is clearly breaking the law here. He should probably STFU about it before he goes to jail.

we should all leave our ceremonial daggers at home when we travel.

or in the checked luggage compartment, at least.
