I just saw it today. It was great. I think it was one of the best movies that I've seen this year. It was very slow paced, but it didn't seem to matter, because you get so into it. So parts were very funny and others scared the crap out of me. You know the parts where the kid is in the book shop and the family is eating in a little pizza place. Well those parts were filmed in my town, right down the road from my house. I actually go to that book store a lot. It is a used book store. The Pizza place is called Momma's Pizza or Mom's Pizza, I think, in real life. I've never eaten there but I heard it's good. I actually think it's a take home pizza place, not an actual restuarant. One thing in the movie that isn't authentic in real life in the town is that there aren't any parking meters in my town.
just saw the movie. i really enjoyed it. it had some pretty funny parts, which was a great surprising addition. i really didn't think the movie was slow, b/c i was too into it. was it just me or was the alien portrayal kinda cheesy? it just looked like the typical alien sketches from the 1950s and 60s... i think they could have done a better job. Pheonix did a great job in his role as the brother. the little girl was incredibly cute. Culkin looks just like his big brother. The score was incredible! all in all a really good movie, but not one i will buy on DVD.
I agree totally. His movies do have a creepy sense to them, but I don't see how the Sixth Sense, Signs or Unbreakable were similar at all. I liked Signs better than the Sixth Sense. The Sixth Sense was ruined for me though, the stupid movie theatre had the times marked wrong on the theatres and we were late, so we went in to the movie and it was halfway over (but we didn't know) and I see the end and I am not suprised at all and it didn't make any sense... I have watched it again and it is a good movie, but Signs is my favorite. drapg - the alien was a little hokey, but still scary and cool. The beginning of the movie felt kind 50/60'ish and the alien matched. I am still happy with how they did the alien, very freaky.
What, like a flying saucer blowing up the White House? One of the things I like about the movie is that it doesn't doesn't go over top like every other crappy, hollywood blockbuster.
care to expound? needed more what? after seeing the movie, i felt the same way too... probably b/c hollywood has inundated the movie-going public with huge violent movie endings... but after about 15 minutes, i couldn't think of a better way to end it, so i ended up liking the movie. i liked the ending for its subtlety... no unnecessary war of the worlds, which is pretty cliche. it had a quiet dignity to its ending.
Word. One of my only complaints about the movie is that whenever the little girl (Abigail Breslin) was on the screen, she was all I was watching instead of anything important that may have been happening in the foreground. Rory does look a lot like his older brother and also has some similiar mannerisms, it seems like... well, they were both quite good.
Halskdjflakjsdflkajdfljksa;ldkfjas;ldf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is all i have to say about this movie. It is one scary mofo. Another observation about the alien, does the one at the end not look totally different than the one in the video from Brazil?
Just got home from watching AP3 and Signs. Both kicked butt! I just wish Signs was a little bit more freaky. There really was not a supernatural aspect to it.
I just got back from seeing "Signs". I enjoyed it. I thought it was a lot of fun. There were holes in the character development that I think might have been patched up with another ten minutes worth of footage, but that's Hollywood for you. All in all, I got what I payed for. I jumped in my seat more than a few times, and that's in the middle of a rowdy New York audience, so it had to have done something right. The best move this film made is the same move that any well done Horror/Sci Fi film makes. You never really got a good look at the alien till the end. That's what made the original "Alien" so good, and the later sequels so bad. It's what made the original Halloween so fantastic, and the later sequels so awful. The key to any good Thriller is to let the audience's imagination do most of the work for you. There's a shot in this film that is right out of Halloween....it's the first time you see the alien's form as it's standing on the roof....extremely reminiscent of the first time Jamie Lee Curtis sees Micheal Myers in Halloween. It's just a glimpse, and it's from far away. Just enough to let your imagination run wild. Wonderful choice. It really disturbs me to hear some of you talk about how slow this movie was. This, to me, is symptomatic of what's wrong with our movie-going culture. This is why fewer quality films get made today. Did you want more MTV-style cuts and action sequences with big explosions? The movie moved that way for a reason...it's called tension, and it's the reason you enjoyed the film. It's what made it possible for you to identify with the characters and jump out of your seat when things got going. Maybe you would have preferred Will Smith hijacking one of the invisible alien ships and shooting all of the others down in a nail-biting, big bang conclusion. Because I guarantee you, somewhere, in a production meeting long ago, it was suggested by at least one Hollywood producer. They know what the public wants.
Saw "Signs" last nite and was pretty disappointed. Interesting premise (and I love alien/UFO stuff!), but they didn't do a good job of developing the topic. The acting was good but the plot just didn't have any bite...and it was pretty slow. All four of us thought there was less to this movie than meets the eye. A lot of hype and not a lot of substance. Guess I'm in the minority here but the movie just didn't do anything for me.
**********************SPOILER**************************** The alien was able to adapt to its environment (camaflouge), but I still don't know why it was a bright green in Brazil and a darker green in Mel's house. That was pretty cool how the alien's skin changed to match the color of the son's shirt. When they showed the footage from Brazil, wasn't that freaky????
I had no problem with the speed of this particular venture. It did fit the movie. Unfortunately, it got slower for me when I figured everything out and just had to wait for it to come. The "invasion" period was good and you could tell that he learned what to do (and mostly what not to do) a bit from Blair Witch. I was hoping we would not really see the aliens, but they had to to finish with that cheap ending...so oh well. Why does Stuart Little get brought up? It is not comparable in any way. He did not write Stuart Little (he adapted it for the screen from the book), he did not direct it, it was a kid's movie, etc. It really cannot be seen as a Shyamalan movie in comparison to the three he produced, wrote, directed, etc. Again, I think he is good...just that he needs to eaither break away a bit or stop becoming so obvious with his movies where I feel as if he is beating me over the head.
rimbaud - how would you have liked the ending? I was happy with it, but I would have enjoyed a little more elaboration at the end as far as how the rest of the world faired versus the aliens, maybe some news footage from around the world, just a little more detail. more spoilers...... I was almost 100% sure that when the came back into the house through a busted window at the end that there was going to be an alien in there waiting for them. They instead panned around the room and Mel Gibson came out with his preacher outfit on. How did you know what was going to happen? Which parts made you think anything for sure was going to happen later in the movie? Was it Shyalaman's part?
I thought it was a really, really good (not great) movie. The thing I enjoyed was deciphering how many levels of "signs" there were, such as crop circles, asthma, "swing away", etc. The title was not just about the crop circles. Absolute best part was Phoenix sitting in the closet, watching the TV, and his reaction when you saw the alien in the Brazil video. Someone earlier mentioned the sound editing was good. Let me tell you, I thought the sound was fantastic. I saw the movie while on a Disney Cruise ship in the Walt Disney Theater, where the acoustics are perfect. Many times, we where scared out of our seats by the sound effects alone. BTW, my family saw the movie for free....(if you don't consider the price of the cruise!)
Spoilers... Well, the first obvious was that Gibson needed to get his faith back...and that it would be through his wife (she took it away, she brought it back) - the periodic flashbacks made it obvious that the end of that sequence would provide salvation. Next, the son hated him - was a mommas boy, so you knew he would have to be directly invovled - God would be redeemed in Gibson's eyes and Gibson woud be redeemed in kid's eyes. Kid had breating problems, we learn that aliens use poison gas...daughter was psuedo-psychic and sais there would be problems with son... "Swing away" - obvious from the beginning...coupled with his comment about it not beig right not to swing, he was a failure at baseball, etc. Then - big shock - Shyamalan shows the bat on the wall (after pheonix had mentioned that it was on his wall) in the middle of the movie- of course there will be a showdown there. Yeah, Shyamalan's part was obviously more important than just saying "I'm sorry" coupled with the aforementioned pseudo-psychi daughter having an obsession with water. As far as the ending goes - again, just too obvious (I didn't fully buy Gibson's extreme beginning take, either...and the outline of a cross that had been taken down...too cheap for me) and I didn't want to see the aliens. Again, the movie was fine - I didn't hate it...I just didn't love it and do not have a strong interest to ever see it again. Just my opinion, though.
