Here is my favorite weapon against the telemarketer :

Let them get into their salespitch for 30 seconds or so.

After 30 seconds, interrupt them and tell them you have food in the oven, and that you will be right back.

Then check the phone every 2 minutes or so to see if they are still hanging on.

I once had one hang on for 15 minutes, after which I finally told the poor guy "wow...you're still hanging on?"

When he said "yes, now back to what we were talking about", I said "no thanks...I just wanted to waste as much of your time as you have been wasting mine" and then hung up.

U.S. Court Strikes Down `Do Not Call' Law, Congress Says
Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- A U.S. court has struck down a federal law barring telemarketers from calling homes and listed on a do-not-call registry, the U.S. House Commerce Committee said in a statement.

``Contrary to the court's decision, we firmly believe Congress gave the FTC authority to implement the national do-not- call list,'' said Representatives John Dingell and Billy Tauzin in a joint statement. ``We will continue to monitor the situation and will take whatever legislative action is necessary to ensure consumers can stop intrusive calls from unwanted telemarketers.''

my favorite is to talk reaaaall soft, so that they can barely hear you. once they start asking you to speak up, tell them to hold on, that you're going to try something, and can they tell you if they can hear you. then bang the hell out of the phone against the table/desk (or yell really, really loud)!

    they usually don't like that.

my other favorite is continually flirting with them. it's even better when it's a man. talk about someone getting thrown off of their pitch! :D

I don't see what's teh problem is. Either don't pick up and phone or just say NO. I mean think about it, if you have someone you know who need jobs and working as a telemarketer, they are gonna lose their jobs. This is so pathetic. Yup, lets put more people out of unemployment line.

If you say no, and they won't stop, and if they call you back once you hang up on them, then what?

So I guess you advocate junk mail and e-mail spam as well, right?

Of course, if no one buys, then these people are going to end up losing their jobs anyway. We can't save their jobs unless we buy stuff.

Just making the call doesn't make the company any money.

I've never, ever said yes to a sales promotion pitched to me over the telephone. Why should I have to deal with the constant calling (I get at least two unsolicited sales calls per day in my home. The other day, I got fourteen calls. I have to turn my telephone off when I go to sleep at night because sometimes the sales calls start at 8am, which is before I get up)?

EDITED TO ADD: Plus, more and more of the sales calls I get are automated anyway. Stopping them isn't taking some poor telemarketer's job away.

I think we know what nbastar does for a living...

As for telemarketers being unemployed, big whoop...They're mostly college kids making $6/hr anyways
