Which sounds better ChOF or COF for Chinese Only Fan?

Why can't we say that this guy is not an NBA player?

In CNT history, they never had a decent PG or a decent coach. How could one assume a PG from CNT can make the NBA? Just because he speaks Chinese? Damn I speak Chinese, and even Yao's dialect. Let's not get carried away. Yao is great, but he's a rare product, rather of his own, than a product of Chinese basketball system. Hopefully there are more to come, but a PG now? You would think SF is the best PG in NBA history.

You should change your handle to notsosmooth.... ;) You get ticked off too easily at any opinion dare to differ from yours.

I never said he is good enough for the NBA. Actually I almost laughed at people who were so excited about Kings going to try him out.

But he certainly isn't as bad as our ballboys.

Actually A-Di-Jiang, now the the CNT assistant coach, used to be
famous for his Steve-like ball handling skills except not so
turnover-prone. He was the star of the CNT of the early 90s
which earned the no. 8 spot on both the Olympics and World
    BBall Champ.

Yipengzhao, some points to consider :

    1) The CNT had a tough time handling the Dallas Mavs rookies and scrubs. That is the best evidence that your opinion is probably an erroneous one.

    2) Yao Ming had problems facing not-so-great centers in Jerome James, Steven Hunter, etc. Yao rarely has a field day with any center - it's sporadic.

    3) I think last year's Orlando Magic would crush the CNT. Tracy McGrady single-handedly could probably wreck their entire offensive flow.

    4) Yao would indeed have a good game, but Dirk Nowitzki has good games in international play - the German team is still sucky.

    5) Yao has great games in these international games, but can barely make it through an entire NBA game without collapsing. Any US team would put running the CNT into the ground as their first priority.

Whether or not Yao has a good game is almost irrelevant - the CNT would be destroyed facing even the lowest of competition from the NBA.

Oh, and this conversation is slowly drifting away from anything Rockets related... come to think of it, it started out as something not really Rockets-related. :)

    1. at that time the Chinese team was in its first weeks of working with a new coach... the roster/lineups weren't set, and they were adapting to a new system. they are still not at 100%. also, in two of the games Yao didn't play, I believe.

    2. sure... we all know that on certain days guys like Eddy Najera has made Yao sucks his balls and like it. Plenty of people have brought this up many times. But Yao keeps getting bigger and is getting a more and more dominant mindset. Also, remember this Chinese national team is built around Yao. He knows he's getting the ball, so he just needs to establish a rhythm. That wasn't always how it was in the NBA. The sporadic-ness wasn't all his fault.

    3. I disagree that last years Magic would have destroyed the CNT. Also, last year's Magic wasn't much worse an the 2001 Rockets.

    4. The German team argument doesn't hold water. In 2002 the USA national team beat the German team by 17 points. I know that team wasn't exactly a "dream team." But don't you think it's at least 17 points better than the 2001 Rockets? Also, the German men's team currently has a #16 FIBA ranking. Which means that China is ranked ahead of them.

    5. True. But the CNT is better coached right now. Don't you think that Del Harris would try to slow down the tempo on offense to counter it? He's not a r****d you know. Team USA 2002 beat China by 19 points. That was a run and gun team too. This version of the CNT is more talented and better coached than the 2002 CNT.

I really disagree that the Chinese team would be "destroyed" by the lowest level of competition in the NBA. If they don't get "destroyed" by team USA in the Olympics, would that prove it to you? Also, what would constitute a destruction?

I agree Rockets would be the winner. But such things are actually not as one-sided as one might think, especially if international rules are used rather than NBA rules, that would make a pretty big difference.

China and many good NTs can hang with USA for half a game sometimes. They'll get tired and loose towards the end. But they can play tough for half a game. China was only one point down to team USA a couple of years back I forgot it was the Olympics or WCs.

Chinese NT also beat the NCAA all star team convincingly a few years back with no Yao Ming. That team had many would be NBA players.

Rockets was a border line play off team so obviously they'll win. But given the right oppoturnity, it might be close at times.

No that wouldn't. Why? Because college teams have beaten Team USA in the past. Team USA rarely plays together and usually is just scrambled together at the end. This is not true of NBA teams that have played together for years. Do I think the CNT would lose by 50 to the Rockets teams of the past? No. Do I think they'd lose by more than 20? Yes.

As for your comment regarding Del Harris's coaching. The CNT had a 15 point lead in today's game. Australia decided to apply some pressure and the CNT fell apart and lost a 15 point lead in about 4 minutes. Where are the FIBA rankings of these 2 teams since you put emphasis on this being some sort of criteria? My opinion is that any team that can pressure the CNT backcourt for an entire game can kill them.

Like I said, Team USA has been beaten by a college team in the past - Team USA is not the best TEAM that can be put out there; it is the best collection of talent. If you want an idea of what the best TEAM that can be put out there can do, look what teams like the Spurs have done to teams like Euroleague champions in the past at those McDonald's games. That Spurs team could've beaten Team USA handily in my opinion simply because they were a team that had played together for a while.

... and another thread about the CNT team becomes non-Rockets related. lol. I'm bowing out of this discussion.

    what game was that?
i think you maybe referred to the China vs. USA at the 2001 world university games. China with both Yao and Wang playing barely beat USA by 1 point. Yao blocked a potential game winning shot by a US player as the clock running out. the US team was composed of NCAA0 players, most of them average at best. as far as i know, only two players in that team made into NBA, Ely and Juan Dixon, both are NBA scrubs.

    this is FYI...

    http://www.fiba.com/pages/en/misc/ranking/FIBAranking.asp

yeah... i don't really care enough to craft a careful response plus we 're derailing the thread and encouraging more threads like "sigh zhufangyu"... tomorrow it's going to be "sign linan" <-- which, haha, i'd actually agree with because he's like their best player.

anyway... instead of making team USAs in the future, we should follow your idea and just rotating sending in each of the 28, or is it 29 now, teams.

My prediction if each Rocket player received $1000 for each point in the margin of victory then the Chinese team would lose by 100.

The reason why the scores aren't worse is that Team USA doesn't take the competition seriously and in the case of an NBA team, once the Rockets were up by 20 or 30, Mike Wilks starts seeing time.... That's the only reason it wouldn't be worse.

The CNT hanged with the US Olympic team at half time two years ago in the world championship, but they couldn't hang on in the second half and lost the game by a wide margin. However, they showed they could be competitive against the US Olympic team for two quarters. Keep it in mind the Rockets wouldn't be as good as the US Olympic team, at least in terms of talent. The CNT now has a vastly improved Yao Ming,an NBA coach and some added nice talent. They also match up well against the Rockets because the Rockets back then didn't play much defense, which suits the offensively minded CNT players. While the CNT players don't play much defense themselves, they could play the zone and let Francis and Mobley hog the ball shooting from outside. Mobley wasn't as good a shooter back then. The CNT struggle against teams with good ball movement but that was not the case with the Rockets stagnant one on one plays. The old Glen Rice or Walt Willaims may not be better than Li Nan, a pure shooter who scored 70 points in one game(yes it was in the CBA but IMHO an old Glen Rice without his knees wouldn't be able to duplicate it). Cato was a lazy and unmotivatived bum back then. In short, the current CNT vs. the 2001 Rockets can be competitive.

I guess the 2001 Rockets would win but not by much.
Don't judge the CNT by their performance against Dallas summer league
because Yao only joined them less than a week. Coming into Olympics
CNT will be a much better team.

    Advantage 2001 Rockets
    1) Atheletic and Strong
    2) Francis and Mobley were at the top of their game. Moochie was
    not bad either

Unfortunately, Francis will struggle against a Zone defense anchored by
Yao. Mobley will also be less effective. The Zone would serve the Rox
for good because of the lack of ball movement.

Moreoever, Rox is not very good at forcing turnovers. Failure to explore the
biggest weakness of CNT. In fact, CNT is even better at full court pressure,
but I don't think it would be effective against the way more atheletic Francis
    and Mobley.

Rox would still win the game 7 out of 10 times. But CNT does have chance.

Any NBA TEAM could beat any international team easily.

The same thing can not be said about Team USA.
