Seriously. That whole era (which still marks as the epitome of "houston fandom"... moreso than the Rockets championships) was for a team that lost in the conference championship. Not the Super Bowl, but an entire game before that. Add to that all the pain of the run and shoot years, losing a team, getting a new one... that has gone through unprecedented growing pains... and the entire city may explode if the Texans ever become really good. Yes, explode.
The only fan base that can understand what we are going thru is the Cleveland Browns. This city is such a football town and is craving for just a playoff appearance. Does our owner even enjoy watching the sport? Or did he just think it's a cool thing to own a team, and a great way to create more business opportunities? Maybe Bush senior sits with him to explain what a first down is like I used to do with my uncles. "There are 4 downs..if you don't manage to get 10 yards in the first three downs, you will kick the ball away on 4th down." (in spanish)
So what? It clearly wasn't a team that was being built towards something great. It was one season, it was a great playoff game that they ultimately lost, none of those players remain from that team, and they're just as mediocre now as they ever were. In fact, I bet most Browns fans would trade that one playoff season for an established foundation of veterans and young players that the Texans currently have. I know I could care less if that 7-9 David Carr team ended up making the playoffs that year... because we all know that the eventual result of that team led to nothing spectacular.
McNair is wasting boatloads of good will by floundering around with an inexperienced coaching staff and a GM team that has not make the best talent choices. But there is talent, especially on offense. The defense is a disaster and needs a major overhaul. The offensive line which was horrible forever has come around, so the running game has greatly improved. Of course, Foster has helped. But Andre has probably peaked and is on the down turn with nagging injuries. Shaub is not a championship quality QB, but he is probably as good as Flacko and Cutler. With some defensive changes, a coaching overhaul, and a tweek or two to the offense, surely the Texans are a playoff team. If McNair stands still, look for more of the same. I won't be watching though. Such a shame, because Houston is potentially the best football town in the U.S.
I am way further from a texan fan than I was a fan of the Oilers, Texans are not even close to sniffing my fanhood the oilers had, although I'm not a titans fan. I do however watch the games, root them on but only casually, i laugh when they lose and blow games in the end. Lately it's been very entertaining watching how they are able to lose and am rooting for losses at this point because that may be the only way change is brought in. There is something about this team that just makes it impossible for me to have their back, their is a definite losing culture here. Something about Kubiak, about Mcnair, not so much the players we have but the organization itself. They just are like the definition of LOSERS. I also think the Texans take up way too much radio airtime with all the complaints and disgruntled fans when talk show host and fans can be talking about the rockets winning 8/10 latley. Not saying rockets shoudl have equal time as the texans since they are obviously the bigger sport in town, but it's almost like the rockets don't exist during football season.
I needed to update the list Come on guys. . . I really think I am taking the 1st 3 steps of the 12 step to no longer be a fan . . . if Wade becomes DC and Kubiak stays Rocket River
