Yup. Mack has done an unbelievable job filling in our vacancies. Losing Akina could have been a HUGE loss both from a coaching and recruiting standpoint. Gray is about as good as a replacement you can get, you could even argue that he is an upgrade considering the extensive NFL experience he's had. It's also nice bringing a Longhorn back home. Hook 'Em
When UT-Austin branch loses to Baylor, you could argue the program is indeed in shambles. BUT, here's the good news: Spoiler Garrett Gilbert still has TWO YEARS of eligibility remaining!!! **STOOPS IS SMILIN'**
I actually respect the Rice Owls fans who show support (despite) of their team. But talking smack about other teams? That's just full of lulz. This thread would not be the same without your posts.
It's funny that people see this as a negative. This is what tons of us UT fans wanted once it was clear the team wasn't going to be very good. Lose out, force major changes, and hire an all-star lineup of top-tier coaches to bring life to the program. I think most Texas fans are immensely excited about everything that's transpired.
This. All the Aggies (+texxxxxxxxx) would have been doing the exact same thing if there were no coaching changes. ("No coaching changes after 5-7?!?! What is ol' Mack thinking?!) But now that Mack has decided to make changes, the same people are claiming that our program is in "FALLING APART!11!!" Our program fell apart last year. Now, it is being rebuilt. And on paper, it is being rebuilt in a major kick-ass way.
Seriously though -- how soon do you think it will be before UT-Austin branch wins 10 games again? Next year? 2 years from now? 3? If Gilbert remains the QB, I don't see them winning 10 games the next 2 seasons. THEN, you've got to start over with an inexperienced QB the season after that.
Gilbert isn't everything, all we need is a mark ingram like player (aka malcolm brown) to carry the ball 20-25 times a game.
You underestimate Gilbert. He did a lot of on the job training last year and he will only improve with another offseason program. Keep in mind that this is coming from an Aggie...not exactly the biggest Gilbert fan.
Sounds like Harsin wants to focus on the running game, which might take pressure off the starting QB.
so basically you're saying that all you need to do is find a freshman who can perform like a Heisman trophy winner. That should be NO PROBLEM!!! *snicker*
Former All-American at Texas turned first round pick. 3rd all time in interceptions. Went to the NFL and became a multi-time Pro Bowler. Has been coaching for awhile now, including a stint as defensive coordinator with the Redskins. Most recently was the Seahawks defensive backs coach. Largely regarded as a great teacher. We pulled a successful DB coach directly from the NFL who also happens to bleed burnt orange. This is a home run hire.
