I think the first JR Smith (behind the back) dunk was the best dunk of the night. I wish it was him vs. Josh Smith in the finals. I don't know if anyone could do that behind the back dunk.

yet more proof that nash makes amare. :) seriously though.

the best dunk of the night was by far the behind the back in the air. even if he stole it fron live he still pulled it off first and it looks even more ridiculous when they showed the slo-mo.

that little kick pass nash did was also straight out of live as is the pass off the head. of course in the game the actual dunker does it.

Josh simith was badass, but the only thing that seperates the modern dunker like him to the old ones is that they don't jump off one foot, they have to gather w/ 2 and jump then do the motion....which i think isn't as great, but still impressive....I think thats y MJ was so badass, b/c when he did most of his dunks, it was off one foot...more fluid motion.... =)

Didn't they get judged on their first dunk attempt (whether it was a miss or a make)???

That's why J-Smoove won. He made his first dunk attempts while the others did not.

If Amare had made his first attempt with the flashy Nash pass-ins, he would have gotten 50s for them and won.

I thought Smith's last dunk was his best, by far. That was just awesome.

Also, when he put on Dominique's jersey, I found it ironic that he actually did a dunk that MJ was more famous for (windmill style) than Dominique.

Actually, the way he brought his legs up behind him before he windmilled reminded me of some of Clyde's dunks.

Dominique always did very little with his legs when he dunked. He was all about power and movement in his arms.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that when Smith put on Dominique jersey.

I just watched the 88 dunk contest I can say that Dominique is and was the master of the windmill.

LOL who cares its a video game. Kobe actually did this dunk in a Adidas commercial a few years back but it was faked. JR Smith deserves props for actually pulling this one off in real life.

Its a different style windmill. Jordan's windmill was finesse, and Nique's windmill was pure unadulterated power.

Smith's windwill was more MJ like.

I think the only guy who compares to Nique's style of dunking these days is Amare, if only for the power (definitely not the creativity)

Guys like Andersen and Stoudamire should not be selected to be in a dunk contest. They dont have any finesse in their dunks. Nash did all the hard work in the dunk contest for Stoudemire's dunks. Last time I checked, Amare was the one competing NOT Nash. I would have rather seen Josh and JR battle it out. I bet JR had some tricks up his sleeve. I just didnt get any excited from watching Amare and Andersen dunking... ALSO, how about they add some more contestants. I know there must be some young rookies that have some tricks. I watched guys at UH that have some sick dunks, I'm sure there are a bunch of guys in the NBA that can do some really awesome dunks. I like have 8 contestants.

Well the dunk contest next year has some potential to be sick! It's in Houston. Everyone host city loves to see one of their own guys in the contest. Tracy Mcgrady anyone??? I can see Steve getting in it too because of how much he loves the city and the fans. That would then open the door to guys like Vince and Kobe and I don't think LeBron can say no 3 years in a row! All these guys plus the defending champ, Josh Smith? Make the Dunk Contest 6 deep and put it down in Htown next year!

I'd put it 8 deep like the old days:

    Josh Smith
    Vince Carter
    T-Mac
    Steve Francis
    Kobe Bryant
    LeBron James
    Desmond Mason
    Jason Richardson

These kinds of things will NEVER EVER happen again under the current NBA environment. There is no way all these players will come out and do something like this.

Almost all of these guys have huge endorsement deals, and keeping good images is key to their dollar values. So, if, let say, they all come out and dunk it out, and Desmond Mason wins it all, it'd be a slap in the face for Carter, T-Mac, Francis, Bryant and James, and also for Nike, Addidas and Reebok. There will be only one winner, and everyone else is a loser. No one wants to see that, other than fans, of course.

You think Nike, Reebok, Adidas don't want the extra air time their sneakers will get in a dunk contest, win or lose? Free advertising, win or lose for them.

Add a financial incentive to the players, or make participation mandatory, just get it done. If all you could get in the baseball homerun championship were rookies and mediocre vets, that would be pretty lame too. At least this year Josh Smith (and Nash) put on a nice show.

Agreed in principle. However, don't you think if that's the case, players would just flock to the Dunk Contest? Heck, Shaq and Yao would have come out and make a couple of dunks (layups for Yao), just to showcase their shoes.

Well obviously the league would do a screening process. Only allow big name dunkers.
