I enjoyed reading that SI article so much, I read it twice. I am trying to remember some tough guys that played in the NBA (e.g. Laimbeer, Mahorn), but those guys were either outright dirty or borderline dirty. Patrick is just so intense. The man just never let up. Love it.
Yeah. I liked the part about Patrick asking in huddles about how many points the opposing team is scoring in a quarter, and if it is looking like they are going to score more than 20, he gets mad. I also liked the part about his having no interest in being friends with players on other teams, and even avoids Steph Curry when he comes to town although they are friends from way back, in order to maintain his intensity when he defends him. The Kelvin Sampson comment about how Bev immediately made an impression in the first practice once he joined the Rockets was also great -- like if this was a Western, he walked into the saloon, and asked who is the best defender you have.
That was such a great read! You know what was another great read? that Battier Article about guarding the best players AND the Mamba and we all know what happened.. Battier got put on everyone's Radar and they went at him; it seemed Kobe took it personally. Now that Bev is on everyone's radar I wonder how they will attack him.
That's exactly want we want. We want opposing PG's to go right at them because it will take opposing teams out of their normal offense.
I'm not worried about this som much with Lillard and Parker - but Westbrook is another story. Bev seems to really bring out the best in him when he gets fired up.
It's only because Westbrook is more nutz than Beverley that he seems immune to his antics. Westbrook and Beverley I feel are the same player only Westbrook has more talent. No one in the league brings that amount of unbridled blood lust to a game more than these two. When you got professional players telling you to calm down, that **** is exceptional enthusiasm.
Actually, what happened was Battier lost a step in his advanced age and it compromised his defense. NBA players could care less about a random SI or NYT article.
I saw a mini vid (from a tweet or Instagram) of Bev and Curry entering a building for a shooting practice/workout. If I am not mistaken, someone posted it here. Oh well, I could be wrong.
You're right, ynnis... he said in this Q&A at the start of the season that he worked w/ Steph in NC. http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/qa-patrick-beverley
My favorite Rocket from the 1994 championship team (aside from Hakeem) was Mad Max. I just loved his all out desire to outplay his opponent. Patrick Beverley is the first player I've seen on Houston since then that has that same intensity. Absolutely love his intensity and commitment. Imagine if our entire lineup had that commitment....
Me too. Cassell was pretty serious, but nowhere close to the intensity Bev brings, which is the closest ot MadMax. Someone posted that we needed to keep the nucleus of the starting five for at least 5 years and I will agree to that.
If only more players on our team had this mentality. This is why Harden should be even more embarrassed by his lack of defense. You have a guy on a ****ty contract working his but off while you are just going through games using your talent.
Lots of interesting tidbits in that article. I'm glad that Kevin Love seems to like Beverley even though he's tight with Westbrook. Hey KLove, if you don't want to deal with PBev anymore, just join the Rockets. I like how Bev's 3-year old sister is a LOF. Jeremy Leremy! Also interesting that "Linsanity" may have helped get Beverley to the NBA due to scouts re-opening closed doors.
