Yao will be a free agent after this season, meaning his $17.7 million deal comes off Houston’s books. Battier, Chuck Hayes and Jared Jeffries are also free agents, and the Rockets should be willing to deal any of them for draft picks. They were probably already looking to dump Jeffries and his $6.9 million deal — perhaps to the Kings, with incentives thrown Sacramento’s way — in order to get under the luxury tax. Battier has some value around the league, though he also has value as a mentor to Williams, Chase Budinger and Patrick Patterson in Houston ...
