Attempts is a little misleading, since getting fouled doesn't register as an attempt unless you make it.

Basically, Martin shot the ball more than 18 times to get those points.

They do the same stat rules for every player in the league. Why do you insist Martin's stats to have an asterisk?

Am I the only one who thinks Martin doesn't deserve at least half of the foul calls he gets?

Maybe not, but all of you are wrong.

I'd rather not watch someone -- even a Rocket -- shoot 15 free throws in an All-Star Game. When he's not getting foul calls, which he wouldn't get at the ASG, he's half the player he ordinarily is.

And what do you suggest then? Count all the plays that led to free throws as misses?

With Martin, all those plays are almost as good as a shot made.

There's nothing misleading about it, it’s standard lingo and you can always do the math.

The way I see it Martin is like the gamer who is an exploiter, can’t get mad at him because is not prohibited and you can try and do the same.

The standard formula for true shot attempts is: FGA + 0.44*FTA

For small samples its a rough estimate, but good enough.

I'm not saying that he's wrong for doing it, but especially in the game last night he was getting ridiculous calls. As long as the refs keep calling it, I'm all for Kmart flailing like a fish out of water at every sign of contact.

    Neither did Reggie Miller.

Neither do most of the stars who gets calls. If you are near the league lead for free throw attempts chances are a lot of those foul calls are not deserved.

I can score 34 points on 18 shots by going 17-18. Or by going 10-25 and getting fouled 7 times so that 7 attempts aren't counted.

In the second instance it took seven more plays to score the same 34 points, yet in each instance it could be said that the player scored 34 points on 18 shots.

That's a significant difference in efficiency.

kevin martin is a great scoring guard.

but he is not an all-star.

    sorry.

we're talking about a player who can barely score if a defender touches him (hence why he tries to draw contact to get to the line every time).

    crafty? yes.

    all-star? no.

Usually you need to be flashy and well-liked to be voted in the allstar game and there are too many of those SGs that people will vote for over a pansy calm dude like KM.

A shot taken in this sense refers to a field goal attempted. And free throws are not field goals.

But if you're fouled, it doesn't count as a field goal attempted, even though a field goal was actually attempted and a possession consumed. If you're trying to measure efficiency, that gives you a false reading.

A better way is to measure points per attempt, including fouled attempts. Simple and accurate way to measure efficiency.

Yeah Martin doesn't deserve the fouls he's getting but Kobe, Carmelo, Wade, and Lebron do. You people are so self-hating and clueless it's hilarious, lmao.

But sadly Martin will not be getting in, West is very deep at guard.

I'm not sure what the argument is here. Sure it is a bit of an exaggeration to say that he scored 45 on 18 shots but he is the 3rd most efficient shooter in the league behind Nowitski and Nash so it still sums up his game nicely, even though a bit inaccurate.
