I read in a Chinese newspaper that the name Yao is bringing in about $5M a year for the Rockets .....

$5M for a cheerleader? Yao should just retire and make everyone's decision that much easier.

I'm optimistic, and it could happen. See Bill Walton, Zydrunas Ilgauskas, and Grant Hill.

I know people are frustrated with the Glass Man, but if he isn't gonna command much, and won't be counted on to be a major part of the team, it makes not only good financial sense, but also good basketball sense to keep him around. If he is injured, no big loss, and he can be a difference maker if healthy. His per 36 min numbers were right in line before he got hurt again, so he can still play.

As long as he's not expected to be a focal point, what's the harm. Build as if he's not gonna be a major contributor, simply pencil him in as the backup center.

Hopefully there will be some early termination clause for injury.

Um... aren't we forgetting something here?

A certain Rockets PG is going to be mighty pissed off if they extend Yao's contract after telling said PG that they would NOT be extending any contracts until the new CBA gets done, hopefully next summer. I'd certainly take that as a major slap in the face.

LOL @ Les still doesn't want to give up Yao!

Seriously I think 10 millions for 3 years is a fair contract for a one-legged Yao.

Different situation. We are low balling Yao.

If Brooks is happy to get a cheap contract extension with team options then I'm all for it.

I know Yao is a team player and has a great work ethic and all that, but another year of rehabbing to play in the NBA is an awful lot of fuss.

The guy made plenty of money and might be more concerned about just being able to walk correctly for the rest of his life and enjoying his family and the money he's made. Playing pro basketball is hell on a body, especially if it is as tall as his.

I don't see why he wouldn't retire -- working hard to rehab for yet another year to maybe compete for playing time with Chuck Hayes and Jordan Hill is probably not what he has in mind for a career trajectory.

If the Rockets offer him a league minimum, then he will just retire. I hope they don't dog Yao, and give him a little more money then some want to give him. Just for the fact that he brings in a ton more then he'll make....Don't hate me please.

No offense, but this is why you've probably never won anything.

On a different note, I'm guessing they pitch something in the neighborhood of 5 years/25 mil or 4 years/24 mil.

If Brooks is willing to work for 5 million a year, I guess we can extend him.
