Former UCLA head football coach Karl Dorrell is drawing interest from Duke University, SI.com has learned.

Duke would like to schedule an interview with Dorrell in the near future, but it is believed that the Blue Devils are still in the process of formally contacting the coach.

Dorrell was fired earlier this week after completing his fifth regular season at UCLA. The coach accumulated a 35-27 record as the Bruins head man, guiding the team to five consecutive bowl berths. He enjoyed his best season in 2005, when the Bruins capped a 10-2 season with a Sun Bowl win over Northwestern. In 2006, Dorrell's Bruins upset archrival USC 13-9 on the final day of the regular season, knocking the Trojans out of the BCS National Championship Game.

Duke terminated head coach Ted Roof two days after the Blue Devils finished the '07 campaign at 1-11. During his five seasons in Durham, Roof could only manage a 6-45 record, including just two wins over the last three years. Since Steve Spurrier's last season at Duke in 1989, the Blue Devils have had just one winning campaign (8-4 in '94) and averaged only 2.4 victories per year.

Dorrell, one of six black head coaches in Division I college football this season, also has experience at the NFL level. He served as the Denver Broncos receivers coach from 2000-02 and has strong NFL ties to Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak. It is thought that if he returns to the NFL, it will most likely be under one of those two coaches.
Dorrell's former employer, UCLA, is believed to be interested in former San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci. There is large speculation that Mariucci, currently an analyst for the NFL Network, would like to get back into the coaching ranks.

Could be a good hire as a replacement for Sherman. Fired college head coaches seem to be good fits as NFL offensive coordinators such as Cam Cameron and Dirk Koetter.
