First of all, IQ isn't that important for the president's job. Of course, you don't want a dumb ass to be the leader, but you don't need an Einstein to run the country. (I've heard that Einstein's IQ was about 160)

I actually think that too high of an IQ becomes a handicap when it comes to dealing with the social pressures of dealing with common people.

Either way, public speaking is not a good way to tell someone's IQ. Especially if they want to do comparisons between the presidents. The best way to get an estimate of their IQs would be to study grade school work. I don't think that they could come up with a real IQ, but they could come up with a comparitive IQ between the presidents.

Grades mean nothing to me in general whether it's Harvard or Yale or Texas Tech.

A 91 IQ for Jr. is ridiculous. 100 is average and you can pretty much bet anyone going to a real university will be at least above average in the 100-130 range. I think that the SAT scores would be a decent indicator because they can compare real SAT scores to real IQ scores. I don't think that it's the best indicator though. I know that I could do much better on the SAT now, because my high school education was very weak, but my capabilities were much stronger and unrealized.

91 is just way too low even for Jr. Actually I don't have anything against him and I think that it's a common perception that he's dumb because he doesn't speak as eloquently as Gore or Clinton. I know that I'm smarter than a 91, but people would definitely think I'm a dumbass if I did interviews on TV or speeches. Maybe he thinks too fast and his mind can't keep up. That's how I feel sometimes.

Also, I'm not surprised at all that Clinton was considered very intelligent. I'm too young to remember Carter, or obviously his preceders, but I think that Clinton was very smart. That has nothing to do with whether I like him or not.

I suppose then, if we're determining IQ based on glibness of speech, that game show hosts and car salesmen are our leading intellects.

 

I wonder what Bobby Kennedy's IQ would have been? he seemed to be the most intelligent guy of the bunch....

This one makes no sense to me. I don't know how an SAT score can really come anywhere near projecting an IQ.

For example, I scored low on the SAT (1060), but when I had my IQ tested (when my mother was a psychology grad student), my IQ was tested as well above the 110-112 whatever that this schedule would expect (127 is what the IQ test showed).

The fact that Jimmy Carter’s IQ is so high is proof that a high IQ does not mean you have a snow balls chance in hell to run a country. Jimmy Carter was only the least effective president in my lifetime.

JFK was also not very effective as a president. It is a little known fact that LBJ was much more successful with civil rights issues than JFK. JFK was held in such high esteem because he was assassinated and because he was young and charismatic. The economy was not particularly good during his regime and his screw up with the Bay of Pigs invasion is also probably what got him assassinated.

I know JFK wasn't flawless, far from it. I don't recall putting that in my post, but your magical eyes must have seen something I didn't. I simply believe that his performance in the Cuban Missile Crisis is one of the most significant ever, probably because he saved millions upon millions of lives.

Your right, there isn't really a direct relationship between the SAT test and an IQ test. They are designed to test two entirely different things. The SAT is designed to test knowledge and scholastic ability while the IQ test is meant to test capacity. The correlation chart just shows the SAT score vs. the average IQ for that SAT score. The article that was posted above mentions that there is a fairly predictable relationship that exists.

There are a million reasons they don't coincide for you. Maybe you were tired when you took the SAT, maybe you had bad teachers in HS, maybe you were a lucky guesser on the IQ test .

The point still stands. It is extremely unlikely that Bush Jr. could score a 1206 on his SAT if he was of such low intelligence. Even if he were an extreme overachiever (which we know he wasn't because he liked to party in his youth) it is still unlikely.

 

I think I did poorly on the SAT because it was about 3 degrees in the cafeteria when we took the test. But hey, it was good enough for Texas Tech, so I didn't feel there was any use in retaking it.

Personally, I think GWB is smarter than people give him credit for. Just because someone is a poor public speaker doesn't necessarily mean they aren't intelligent (and vice versa. Reagan was probably less intelligent than given credit for by some because he was a very good public speaker).

If this is true, then the only Pres. on this list that have higher IQs that I do are Clinton (182), Carter (175), and Kennedy (174). My IQ is 156.

I wasn't referring to either one, just to Ivy League education and it's overratedness in general. I also left myself a really big out with "occasionally it means you're smart," since it does at times, but just as often as not it simply means you're wealthy/well-connected.
