Should've never traded Rudy Gay. Morey never would've never made that trade.

I think Rick Majerus sums this conversation best:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vdNCN2-D0Yw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vdNCN2-D0Yw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Why don't the Rudy Gay supporters just realize that:

    1. Houston was never interested in him to being with. To use this reason as a knock on Morey's GM skills is downright dumb. The coach and management were in a certain mindset (win now) and made the correct call.

    2. Rudy Gay is not a better overall player than Shane. The Golden Rule of basketball = be wary of players putting up numbers on bad teams. Despite no contract extension, there have been zero reports of any team attempting to try and get Rudy Gay. However, reports have many contenders seeking a "Battier" type player. Hmmm....

It's funny, most of these arguments people are using to say Battier >>> Gay could pretty much be used to argue Battier >>> Durant.

In his rookie season, yes, last season, as well, his defense has improved a ton this season, but yes, in his rookie season, battier was better than durant.

Don't let your love for Battier blind you to the facts. I've watched a lot of Memphis games this year and Rudy Gay is playing very well. From my other thread in the NBA Dish:

Over 20 ppg on almost 50% shooting from the field (that alone is amazing), going to the line over 5 times a game, over 6 rpg, close to 2 spg, and almost 1 bpg.

Make no mistake about it, he plays hard. I know many here don't value the boxscore, but take a look at it for tonight's game against the Cavs as an example. He wasn't as efficient as he normally is offensively but did other little things to help his team win with 4 steals, 3 blocks, 0 turnovers, and good D on Lebron at the end. The coaching and overall team culture especially when it comes to defense suck at Memphis. I have no doubt on a more mature team Rudy would play even harder in general and better defensively in particular. I don't think the Rockets should've ever traded the #8 pick for Battier, especially when Rudy Gay falls into your lap, but what's done is done. A couple things are for certain: Gay is a proto-allstar and will be a very good player in this league for the next 10 years.

Looking at free agency next year. I would make Rudy Gay and Marcus Camby my top two targets. It would give Adelman an amazing 10 man rotation comparable to the old Sacramento Kings. In this scenario you wouldn't even have to trade Shane, he can go to the bench where he belongs.

    Brooks/Lowry
    Ariza/Budinger
    Gay/Battier
    Scola/Landry
    Yao/Camby

He's a good player but he's one of those guys that I question whether or not could actually be a star on a winning team. Shaky shot selection, zero ability to pass or create shots for others, prone to hoisting jumpers, doesn't play defense, etc.

I've seen my fair share of Grizzlies games this year and he hasn't really impressed me all that much. Yeah, he'll fill up the stat sheets but he really makes you question that boundary line between empty stats and meaningful stats. I also question how much upside he has left in that ceiling of his. In any event, he's a complimentary star AKA a 2nd-3rd option. Would that type of play helper us? Sure, but we never even wanted him in the first place so it's all a moot point whenever the two-week mark passes and somebody creates a new thread on this topic.

Playing under Jeff Van Gundy, Gay would have learned how to play defense a little. Now, he would not have been a stellar defender, but I'd still take him over Battier.

I didn't like the trade when it went down, but I think it's too late to look back now. It still makes me mad how we didn't get Brandon Roy anyway.

battier's trade aside, what's so special about gay? from the draft position he's picked, he's almost a bust. his type, though athletic, is abundant almost in every year's draft.

If Gay wasent on the Grizzlies would he have been the player he is know?

Tell me....How was he going to get his numbers playing with the crew from 2-3 years ago? With T-Mac, Yao, Skip...All of them are guys that needed the ball in their hand.

    Think before jumping to conclusion.

This whole topic makes me laugh. Rudy Gay is a TERRIBLE defender. In so far as caring about winning goes - I once saw him celebrate after a dunk when the Grizzlies were down by something like 15 points. If he has leadership qualities, then explain to me why he can't even seem to manage being the clear cut leader on the Memphis Grizzlies. Clearly OJ Mayo isn't willing to get in line behind Gay. Finally, look at their record during his tenure with the Grizzlies. It's worse than when Shane was with them.

Meanwhile, Shane has been a huge part of the change in culture here in Houston. He was probably the first step in that, actually. There is a reason he and Chuck Hayes are the captains of this team. And you can see our rookies defer to Shane and look for guidance. He is a big part of the reason a guy like Budinger is playing solid enough defense to find time on the court when defense was one of the big knocks on him coming out of college. If you like this current Rockets team and how hard and smart we play, then you should love Shane Battier. He is as big a part of that as anybody. Sure, we've got guys like Hayes and Scola that bring that same kind of effort and smart play - but Battier is the leader.

Personally, I think Gay is a loser and I'm not going to be surprised in the slightest if he never sees the playoffs.

Shane Battier was picked 6th in the 2001 draft. Never did realized he was picked that high.

How can you call a guy who avg 20 on 45% shooting a bust. I bet he is in the top 10 of all no 8 picks. The draft is a crap shot, most likely you won't get a good player.
