Post player do that. If you go to the low post is a different type of offense, is not Adelman offense, there is no flow kill is just a different flow a more standard simple big man flow. Is hard to see the defense, get position and watch the ball. yao can't not simple attack the basket quick because defense are constantly changing for him. Sometime they send a quick double team and he is quick to recognized and pass the ball to get it to the open man, or repost. Sometime they wait for Yao to put the ball on the basket. Sometime they play a man off hanging around the pain, he need to wait for the guy to clear the pain because he can't be more than 3 second then attack. Sometime when single team he need wait for the player to clear the area and move their man to the weak side. Is not easy to do, is not about making quick plays is about reading defense, when you feed the low post you expect to play slow that is old school half court big man offense. You attack quick when you get the ball close to the basket and you got your man pin they you just go and score, the rest you need to take your time thats why you feed the post early on the shoot clock.
My original post about yao ming touches was done to show guys who pick and read the box scores that he touches the ball a lot. His reluctance to be aggressive early when receiving the ball bogs down the offense big time. While trying to get position, he should already know where the defense is coming from. He doesn't have to wait till a man clears because after the entry pass he should be able to "feel" the other defender which is probably a guard. He gets into his move quickly and that guy comes to double, his shooting motion shouldn't be effected by a 6'3 guard. There is a notion in sports that if you think, you stink. That doesn't mean a player should be a dummy and has a low bbiq, but the thinking part should be natural and quick. Even guys who are "slow" like yao, say like a guy like Duncan, he's a quick thinker. Duncan was never a great athelete as far a jumping out the gym or just shaq strong, but he plays quick because he's a quick thinker and he understands angles and plays long. If he had Rasheed's atheleticism, he would be argued as the best player ever. He's already the best 4 ever, if he was a better athelete with his quick mind and fundamentals, he wouldve been better than he already was. Yao just don't seem to have a high bbiq or he knows what to do, but can't do it quick enough to really translate fast.

He has attacked them in the past, usually by making his move before the late doubles arrive, or by spinning away from it due to poor positioning by his man, or by simply ignoring doubles coming from guards by keeping the ball high...as if they are a pesking gnat. He does seem to be doing this less, as if under orders. Does anyone think the doubles this year are preventing the baseline spin moves and forcing him to the middle or to pass. One thing for sure imo, the difference between a star PF/C and superstar/HOF PF/Cs is the ability to beat double teams. Some, like Walton, did it by high post passing, but that's not what Yao is.
That last part is so true. In the nba, they double everyone in the post. Hell, I've seen teams double for no reason. The truly special post/pivot player beat double teams. In fact the double has to be "perfect." If its too later, too early, too small, or not aggressive enough, its like wasting energy. That pivot will still make you pay and pay dearly.
I think he is attempting to repost more this year and move across the lane. He seems to overthink new orders from coaches, rather than just doing his thing when he's feeling it. His usually money move towards the lane for the baby hook seems less consistent and so predictable like the defenses are making him do and jumping on him. Seeming him in Denver from the 6th row, I got to watch his eyes. He is doing a lot of looking like a PG would. With the ball and without, I noticed him canvasing the court. Then again, I haven't been able to see him that close up too often. He didn't have that tunnel vision that is often key to beating doubles, where you're focusing on feeling your man behind, as much as looking for the double. That said, I do think he's improving his post-up positioning. His decisions to attack need to return to being more instinctive. I don't like him looking around all over so much...fockass on the basket sometimes. Force them to play to you by attacking them early sometimes.
The old saying when u think, u stink is accurate. Not saying Yao stink, but he needs to just flow and react. Get the ball, be decisive and do what u do. When he doesn't, the offense bogs down big time.
Yao doesn't get the respect of the officials to attack a double team. He could go thru one man but when both are hacking away and knowing they'd get away with it I don't blame him for passing out.
Maybe you don't know but Duncan, Shaq, etc. hold the ball a lot and not all the time attack quick. Half court basketball is boring and slow. Yes a 6'3 guard can't effect his shot but is not the shoot what the 6,3 guard wants to effect is his dribble. If Yao get the ball 10 feet from the basket unless you wnat him to shoot jumper all the time he needs to put the ball on the floor to back his man down that's where the guard come to take that away. When he receive a pass to the low post. Yao need to wait for the guy to clear out and move to the other side that's where a guy like Head gets all the easy pass off when cutting to the basket. Never heard of the saying give the ball to the big guy and get the **** out of hi way. Usually is a guy is a good shooter he can stay on the 3 point and keep his man close, the rest just move to the weak side corner. No, Yao doesn't know what the defense going to do all the time unless they decide to play him one on one, that rarely happen. Usually a guy who doubles come from anon shooter the problem is that Houston is full of non shooter so the help can come basically form any where. The perfect system for Yao is the JVG or the one that his brother use on Orlando. A team full of shooters and a Big Man download. The problem Houston don't have the personal to do that. Yao playing with the Orlando staff will be giving Lewis, Turkoglu, Petrius so many open shoots. Have you ever saw Shaq play he will hold that ball a lot, is what a big do.
See what I mean? Only good things will happen when yao attacks the double team. Of course he doesn't have to do it too much, just enough to confuse and frustrate the defense. Even Yao and Coach admits he should do this sometimes. http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid823433113/bctid3912160001
No. We have too many great 3pt shooters for Yao to try and score on a double team. 3 quick passes will almost always find someone open for the 3. A double team is often times a blessing in disguise.
i think if the double teams involve short players like the past 2 teams (clips, warriors), yao HAS to attack. attacking the double teams will show to us AND the opponent that yao is not playing and he's aggressive. as a result, refs will reward. he has to mix it up. but i would love for yao to attack the double teams here and there b/c it shows he's aggressive. but when we make shots, the doubles do come slower or not at all. in the 4th last night, the doubles came much slower b/c shooters were making their shots.
Not If the 3's aren't falling. I want Yao to got at the defense every now and then. If Yao becomes passive then there is no reason to double him. The big difference I've seen in the last two games was Yao splitting the double going to the middle of the paint with the short hook. Dream always did this and game teams fits. I think some of the other comments are accurate, Yao needs to be more assertive when he gets the ball. Either attack the double or make the quick pass to the perimeter.
“I’m just attacking the rim,” said Yao, Houston’s leading scorer. “If I catch it in the paint and turn around and draw contact, seven or eight times out of 10, the referee will give you the call.”
yah, you pick your battles. there are dbl teams that are good for attacking, ones that you can do a hop step and split them, but he has to remember to keep the ball down, i wouldnt say its a 90% to but it isn't as effective as passing to the open man, that's for sure
if yao plays dirty, if yao can hop, if yao has quick steps, if yao can make good judgment, if yao play aggressively, one of ifs happens, things are going way better
Yao just said he has to beat the double team sometimes... so who is disagreeing with Yao Ming on this? from the chronicle article after the Golden State game: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/6149977.html
If the rest of the team is off and Yao has to pick up his scoring, then yes he has to attack the double teams. If he is successfully moving the ball out of it and were getting points, then he should continue to pass out of it.. Do whatever is working.
