I usually find myself representing management in real life. But I approach these issues in a "who should've known better" sort of framework. You know if you speak loosely around the workplace, that what you say can have an effect on the psyche of those working for you. If he views them as easily replaceable, maybe the manager doesn't care. But to: 1. lie to a guy about your involvement in trying to move him out; 2. issue a "uh, yes we did" sort of statement thereafter; 3. and then bring him in to patch things up by saying: "hey, you're our guy....but for some bad timing on our part only, though...otherwise you'd be gone and cassell would be here." is just poor management of people to me. and i think the broncos will regret it.
You're not sure Cutler/Cook lied? I demand a trade. I never wanted to be traded. I think Cutler is the more obvious liar.
LOL. but seriously, that does underscore the uniqueness of this situation. jason campbell and vince young are not very good and certainly not in cutler's class. MM mentioned this about 3500 posts ago but it's hard - if not impossible - to name a QB of cutler's ilk (or, if you prefer, potential) being dealt at this point in their career. brees several years ago, but that was an entirely different situation - and brees had massive "one-year wonder" potential at the time. and - wow: it's 2 1's and a 3 + orton for cutler and a 5.... they now have the ammunition to go get stafford or sanchez while using their other #1 on defense....... gotta give denver credit for making a bad situation not quite as bad.
Wow, 2 1sts and at worst a young backup QB. Seems pretty steep for a guy with a lot of attitude problems.
And a 3rd on top of that. I think Denver got a lot more out of this than they expected...they definitely did good here. For the Bears, although they just handed away plenty of future talent, they finally get a QB...it would be like the Astros landing Joe Mauer after all the years with Ausmus.
holy crap.. that's a ridiculous price tag. i hope anyone who wanted him on the texans wouldn't have considered anything close to that.. i'm surprised the bears did it. but still a good move considering minnesota was in the running, so the deal might have swung the division
There is a facebook group called "Jay Cutler is a Little b****"...many members, many pissed of Denver fans. Entertaining stuff.
Bump... For fun, I figured we could bump this thread and see how things are playing out midway through the 09-10 season. No, I didn't bump this thread to mock anybody -- just figured we could generate some [further] good discussions on an issue that some of us were debating rather heavily. For starters, after watching this Josh McDaniels offense I can 100% understand why he wanted Cassel in the first place. This Denver offense is extremely reliant upon the short pass which is Cassel's strong point. And not that Orton isn't capable of making the short pass -- he can, the problem is that's ALL that he's capable of doing. Based off of what I saw from Cassel last year, he's capable of making those intermediate and long range throws much better than Orton is. No, he's no Jay Cutler in terms of dropping back and firing lasers all over the field, but Cassel seemingly fits this McDaniels offense like a glove given what we've seen so far. Orton has been a pleasant surprise. It's becoming increasingly obvious that he can't throw the ball down the field but he's been an effective game manager that doesn't make many mistakes. Nobody in their right mind could have predicted that the Broncos would be 6-2 right now so they deserve major props for that. No, he won't take that team to the next level but some of the posters in this thread would have cried blasphemy if somebody would have predicted Orton would be 6-2 -AND- with better numbers than a 4-5 and still mediocre Jay Cutler before the season started. Cassel hasn't exactly lit the world on fire. Of course, KC on a whole is a complete disaster. No playmakers, no running game, no coaching, no defense.....that's a hard situation for any QB to produce wins. Cassel continues to be relatively mistake-free but he's also not really standing out. I'd like to see how he looks under a different coach before I pass judgment. I still think he's capable of being an effective starter on a winning team not named the New England Patriots. As for Cutler: just more of the same. Just because I don't like him personally doesn't mean i'm straight out rooting AGAINST him. Not the case at all. But to deny that he's making himself look bad (and very overrated) is an extremely hard argument to make at this point. There comes a point where it doesn't matter how naturally talented you are, the question then becomes: are you consistent enough to hold it together for an entire season? Cutler has never been able to do that. He's good in wins and B-B-BAD in losses. For now, he continues to be just a mistake-prone gunslinger that can't get the job done consistently.
haha - i was thinking about this thread tonight. that 5th interception was just pitiful. i won't back down: i would have traded schaub for him (and i think he'd be having a better season in houston than he's currently having in chicago) but that would have been a mistake. (in his ever-so-slight defense, matt forte is running indecisively and the OL looks porous, but - wow......)
17 freaking INTs after 9 games. Wow. I dont care what offense you play in, that is just unacceptable. Ive watched only a handful of his games this year, but other than the velocity on his throws, he's been an incredibly average QB.
Yeah, I didn't see this coming at all. I thought McDaniels was an idiot and had made a huge mistake with Cutler. I was wrong.
He was helped tremendously by a Shanahan offense that has made lots of mediocre QB's look really good. His numbers weren't really any better than the previous guys like Plummer and Griese, though he was much younger than them so the expectation was that he's continue to improve. He's always been inconsistent - he has the physical tools, but he has mental maturity issues. But, to some extent, that's to be expected with a young QB. It's easy to forget since he had so much success early, but I think this is part of the growth process for a QB. I don't think it's panic time for Chicago, but Denver clearly knew what they were doing. They collected picks and now have the opportunity to either trade for or use those picks to find someone they do see as a franchise QB for McDaniel's system.
