They are also out of the Wild Card chase. They are, what, 9 games out? And they have to catch a much better Brewers ballclub? Forget about it! I agree though, that if they sign Wolf and Hawkins, consistency would dictate they continue to look for uprgrades.
Please foward this post to Drayton. me, personally, I wanted Mario. I never liked Reggie Bush, and I never thought he would live up to the hype for a guy as small as he was. Sure I wanted VY because of the hometown thing, but I knew he wasn't an option because the Texans just resigned Carr. But, the Texans are not who I cheer for, so no harm no foul. so Bonds is the key to the Astros final push for the playoffs? yeah, I guess Bonds will make up for Backes total lack of competence as a starting pitcher, and he'll turn Wolf into a gem just by his mere presence, maybe Bonds will turn Roy O back into the Bulldozer he has been the last 6 years, or maybe just by signing Bonds, the Astros will be able to play the Reds everyday for the rest of the season. and oh, BTW. money will be an issue. -signed, Roger Clemens. Nobody questioned what defines a fan or not, well, except you. The dude, said the Astros had nothing to lose, and I simply said yes they do. Thousands of fans. Uncle Drayton knows how to run a business, thats why he is a billionaire. If fans aren't in the seats, Draytons losing money. Barry is not the Astros 2008 saviour. bringing him in now, it's not gonna push us over the hump. Cliff Lee and D. Matsuzaka are what will help us. Darin Erstad +EV Bonds -EV sorry if you don't get the poker reference.
"Darin Erstad +EV Bonds -EV sorry if you don't get the poker reference." More of a reference to gambling as a whole, and I don't see why Darin Erstad is +EV over Bonds. Bonds puts fans in the seats and is unquestionably a better offensive player than Erstad even after having been out of the league this long.
Cat, you make a compelling argument on almost all points. You've actually swayed me to your side. But I have to say--on this one piece--you're smoking some serious crack. Don't you remember the leather recliner and bigscreen TV in his own locker area, and different folks "not allowed" to approach? Come on, man. Clemens is an ass, but his ego does *not* eclipse that of Bonds. They are two peas in a pod. Does Bonds have an ego? "To an extent"?? How about "to the full extent". Just like our boy Clemens.
how bout to make the last 2-months of the season entertaining? this is a no-brainer imo, and i detest bonds.... but it would be fun to watch and you can bet your sweet ass that i would be at MMP to watch him play. edit: and anyone who doesn't think Bonds would put more people in the seats (significantly more) needs to have their head examined.
Comparing Bonds to Clemens is ridiculous. Clemens has been lauded by teammates, has been a mentor to young pitchers, has busted his butt off for his teams, had a great relationship with his managers, and while it may have been all about him, his drive was still always to win. Bonds has been despised by many teammates, hated by the press, had acrimonious relationships with managers, and has always been about Barry Bonds ahead of anything else, including winning
Well stated. The two have comparably huge egos, but one has much better people skills than the other.
My take on it is when the Astros decided to trade for Wolf and Hawkins, they made a commitment to winning games THIS SEASON. With that being the case, signing Bonds would be the only logical thing to do. If they don't sign him, then clearly they are just making moves for the sake of making moves, and they were never really committed to winning in the first place. And that actually angers me MORE, because then they could have EASILY moved some of our more valuable pieces, and gotten some really good prospects for the future, instead of toiling at .500 for the next 5 years. Do I like the guy? No. Do I think he played a big part in ruining the sanctity of the game? Yes. However, do I think he's still a hell of a ballplayer who would actually bring excitement to the park, and actually contribute to this season's cause? Yes, I do.
I disagree with your assessment that signing Bonds means they are not really interested in winning. Bonds is a bad left fielder with bad knees and hasn't swung a bat competitively in awhile now. He brings a lot of headaches along with him, is pretty universally disliked by players and media and retired players alike, AND the Astros still wouldn't be good enough to do much damage even if he was on his best behavior and played great baseball.
I don't know his history with Bonds, so I can't say. I generally agree with your sentiment here though. I don't like managers talking so openly to the media about potential acquisitions, nor do I like them threatening to quit over a player. Their job is to manage the roster they are given. That said, Bonds is not a normal roster acquisition. Perhaps Cooper has some serious issues with him that go beyond what anyone could guess.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/recap?gameId=280810117 Houston manager Cecil Cooper, reacting to an Internet report that the Astros were going to sign career home run leader Barry Bonds as a free agent, said, "Bonds is not a fit for us. If he would come, I would go. I wouldn't want to deal with it." ... The Reds recalled C Hanigan from Triple-A Louisville, optioned RHP Homer Bailey to Louisville and designated C David Ross for assignment. ... Reds OF Jay Bruce went 0-for-4, snapping his hitting streak at 13 games. ... The Reds were outscored in the first inning 11-2 while going 1-6 over their seven-game homestand. They fell behind before their first turn at bat in five of the games.
coop is just bluffing, no way he would leave, he has his shot as a manager he won't leave to be someone else's assistant again.
