He should have gone for it on 4th down. Almost a thousand yards of offense combined in this game and you punt on 4th and 4?

I thought that rule was only for the playoffs.

    Shanahan apparently doesn't.

Someone mentioned that due to a rule change even if the Texans (as team with first possession) made the field goal, the Redskins would have had an opportunity to tie it. If so, Kubiak certainly made the right choice.

Considering no one knows exactly what would have happened had they tried the field goal or gone for it on 4th and 4 AND they ended up winning the game, it was exactly the right call. Sometimes, coaches know what they are doing and they know their personnel better than we do. Give credit where credit is due. How can it be a bad call when they end up winning the game? Look what happened to Washington when they chose to try the kick from almost the exact same distance.

The rules haven't changed from last year. That only applies to OT games in the playoffs. It was still sudden death.

Icing the kicker is coaching 101. I would have been shocked if he hadn't done it (i.e. - Jeff Fisher last season). Truth is: down the stretch, Kubes didn't make any particularly outstanding decisions, and made one very, very questionable one. It's only because of the execution of the players that the Texans won. It could have very easily gone the other way.

    Hell yes !!!

You have a chance to WIN the game, avoid putting your tired players at greater risk of injury etc.

You always take the shot to win, but worse than that terrible decision was not trying to do anything late in the game with 50 seconds left....2 chances to grab the game by the throat and Kubiak blinked.

That is not championship play calling, you play to win, not to avoid losing.

I would agree with the coaching staff's call. They have a lot more information on what Rackers is capable of than the fans. I have to believe that the coaching staff would do whatever gives them the best chance to win given what they know. I'd rather have them make the 'weak' call if that gives them better chance of winning.

FWIW, here are Racker's 50+yd fg statistics:

    overall 19/39 49%
    2009-10 0/0
    2008-09 1/2
    2007-08 3/9
    2006-07 1/7
    2005-06 6/7
    2004-05 5/9
    2003-04 0/0
    2002-03 2/3
    2001-02 1/2
    2000-01 0/0

This will be the downfall of this team come the end of the season, Kubiak's total lack of killer instinct. Luckily, he was playing against his mentor who taught him how to be a gutless offensive play caller, so they were able to catch up in the 2nd half.

Heck, I even understand the decision to be conservative with 50 seconds left when you're in your own territory: a mistake on that end of the field give the 'Skins a chance to score with time left on the clock. It's not gutsy, but at least it's justifiable.

The field-goal-that-wasn't was a very low risk/high reward situation. Kubiak wimped out.

Nice work. So pretty much he had a 50% chance of making it... With hindisght, I say good call. But during the game, I was literaly jumping up and down cursing at Kubiak lol. But hey, what the hell it paid off and Kubiak helped us win with icing the kicker.

    Great Victory by the Texans!!!

I would have ran the ball the previous down. It was a 3rd and 4, and Foster hsa been pretty consistent. Why not run it? If anything you can chip away a few yards.

Oh, it's only in the postseason that the rule was changed? My mistake. Still, look at what happened when the Redskins missed it. The Texans had great field position.

Nice work. Knowing this, Kubes would have gotten heat if Rackers had missed and the Skins scored after needing only 30-35 yards to kick a gimme FG to win.

    Since 2006-07, he's been 5 for 18. And that was pre-kidney stone.

Kubiak played to win. He gave his defense a chance to hold, and then the offense converted. Right call.

I find it hard to believe that people are actually complaining about a coach's decision that, regardless of what laymen and announcers think, turned out to be the correct decision because they won the game. Play 'what if' all you want but the fact is, they won and it wasn't due to any fluke play after the decision.

The perfect example as to why Kubiak chose to punt happened just a few minutes later when the Redskins missed their FG and the Texans had good field position which helped them win the game.
