"without a doubt"? Where are you getting this? Have you heard Colangelo talk about how much he covets Battier? Do you have any reason to believe this at all or do you simply overvalue Battier and overestimate their desire for a wing player? Quite frankly, it sounds like you're pulling this out of your ass. I think we'd actually have a better chance at acquiring Steve Nash than Jose Calderon. Calderon is one of the premiere young point guards in the league while Nash is on the downward spiral. And guess what? There is no way in hell we are acquiring Steve Nash.
Best teams for Calderon are half-court teams, like the rockets. The raptors are a much faster team. This is the reason why T. J. Ford is the starting pg. On other words, the raptors don't really need Calderon. I don't understand why you guys cannot see this obvious fact?! Chris Bosh addressed they need a good defender to go deep in playoffs and this should be their primary task this summer. Battier is a great wing defender. In fact, maybe he is the best one now since Bowen is old. Don't underestimate him! He is every coach's dream player. In fact, I doubt that Morey and Adelman will give up him for Calderon.
No disrespect but I really think what you are saying is quite ludicrous. I'd do Calderon for Battier in a blink, without thinking for a further second. I'm sure, actually more than sure, Morey would trade Battier for Calderon in a flash if he could. There is only one reason and one reason only that Ford is starting---Calderon WENT UP TO HIS COACH AND ASKED WILLINGLY to be benched so that Ford can be the starter PG. Thats how unselfish and a team man Calderon is. AND CALDERON IS THE ONE FINISHING RAPTORS GAMES, even in playoffs. Man if Morey can get Calderon for the coming season I'd make him our lifelong GM if I was Les Alexander --with bonuses every year and a huge salary.
I think too much is made of this. Waaaay too much. Calderon is now stating, Look, make me the starter, if you want me to stay. Earlier in the season I'm sure he and his agent discussed it and said, Look, we take the high road now; we deal with this after the season. Calderon could have challenged Ford in arm wrestling but what would have been the point? (no pun intended)
Do you think if Yao went to Adelman and asked willingly to be benched after he came back from injury, Adelman would agree? T. J. Ford is the pg that the coach Sam Mitchell picked. Ford is the ideal one to run his offense. As long as Mitchell is the head coach, Ford will be the starting pg. You should go to a raptors forum to check it. Actually, I believe more raptors fans want to keep Ford. Ford is an exciting player and he is fans' favor. But, I do think the rockets is the perfect team for Calderon, and Calderon is the perfect pg for the rockets.
The example you made with Yao is completely different from the CalderonFord situation. Calderon and Ford are comparable in ability, both are good guards and starter quality, thats why they have the dilemma they have right now... and well if Shaq/or Gasol was part of the Rockets and Yao went to ask Adelman to come off the bench I'm sure Rick would think about it wouldn't he?? I'd love for Calderon to be a Rocket next season...we'll just have to keep dreaming...me included
Yes. This is the reason why the raptors can let Calderon go since he can get better players back. My point is that it is possible for the raptors to trade Calderon to the rockets.
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Basketball/NBA/Toronto/2008/05/10/5527566-sun.html Trading Calderon the best option for the Raptors By FRANK ZICARELLI, TORONTO SUN The question was posed during the regular season and will continue throughout this off-season, in all likelihood for another two months. T.J. or Jose? Eventually, the Raptors will find out the two can't co-exist, their well-intended plans to meet with all parties notwithstanding. Eventually, one will have to be moved. If you're a Raptors fan, you're hoping the team can parlay the depth at the point position into a serviceable piece, at best a rotation player and at the absolute worst someone who doesn't just spot up on the perimeter and heave jumpers. What the Raptors will discover, likely as soon as July 1 when teams are in a position to offer Calderon, a restricted free agent, a contract, is that Ford is an unmoveable part. Hindsight is a wonderful tool and upon reflection it is so obvious that the Raptors completely mishandled Ford. For this, the entire organization is at fault. There is nothing wrong with Ford that can't be fixed, though. The Raptors knew Ford's medical history when they traded for him, so forget those arguments of Ford being one fall away from ending his career. They knew how much he wanted the ball in his hands. What the Raptors must do is harness Ford, surround him with veterans who understand the game and who have experienced the grind of the post-season. In the past two springs, Calderon was on the floor when the Raptors needed a basket. On each sequence, Calderon and Chris Bosh were the primary options. In each case, they came up short, last year's elimination in Game 6 to New Jersey and this year's exit against Orlando, when the Calderon-Bosh tandem failed to execute a late-game play in Game 2. The one thing Ford does that Calderon can't is create his own shot. For those who want to rip Ford for getting caught up in one-on-one battles, look to Thursday's Game 3 in the West semi-final when Chris Paul tried to exchange baskets with Tony Parker. Another quality Ford possesses that Calderon doesn't is an assassin's approach. You want attitude and an edge and Ford has them. This is by no means a dump Calderon campaign, but the fact remains that Calderon is more coveted around the NBA than Ford. Calderon is a piece the Raptors must explore in trade scenarios to fill the many holes exposed this past season. Calderon might even fetch that 20-point-a-night player to complement Bosh. One thing is certain -- Ford won't.
No way. Even if Calderon is better than Battier, the trade will not upgrade Rockets to another level. So why bother to do it? A champion team need to rob other teams or get lucky on rockies to get good players. See how Bulls got rodman, how piston got Sheed. now look at lakers and celtics. a 'fair' trade will never bring a champion team. That's why Barkeley failed and clidy trade succeded.
I just don't see a Calderon for Battier trade as an upgrade. First of all, we are already short a quality swingman. When we sub for Battier/McGrady, we bring in the midgets who either can't shoot, or can't defend, or some combination of both. We trade Battier away, and now we are short TWO swingmen. And we've got basically expirings left and possibly the pick if we didn't have to give it up for Calderon. Whose gonna trade us good swingmen for our expirings? And we have to have 2 guys. Unless we somehow can move Rafer out along with the expirings to get 2 swingmen. Don't see how we get 2 quality swingmen for espirings and Rafer's contract, ~$14 million.
If Calderon gets traded to another team, he's not gonna want to come off the bench. If we get him, how are we going to balance him and Rafer? Rafer is a leader of this team and he can run the offense better than anyone else on the team. How do we know Calderon can do as good of a job as Rafer?
rafer for outlaw. portland still needs a pg, also mcmillan has said their priority should be to add another veteran. rockets reduce team salary by $900K. mcmillan wants frye to be aldridge's primary backup next season. outlaw was playing backup pf this season. if they get rudy fernandez that pushes martell webster to small forward. so outlaw's minutes if any at sf will come behind webster and james jones. outlaw is excess talent who they trade for a need at pg.
Dream scenerio= Rockets add Calderon and Artest this offseason. Yao Scola Artest TMac Calderon Get it done Morey! Battier and Brooks for Artest First round draft choice, Head, Jackson, Francis for Calderon.
If this is the case, I'd go fix up my dish and watch every Rockets game in HD next season!!! Dream-team indeed...
I read in Raptors forum that the idea is to sing Calderon and trade him for Nocioni. Chicago is looking to move Hinrich so they will need a player like Calderon, the Raptors need a defender who can score, and Nocioni fits that need a player with good defense and able to bring up sporadic 25-30 points nights. So, the Bulls will be still in need of a Sub PG and Alston may come in handy along with someone else to try get us Kirk.
