I don't think there's a qualifying offer that's possible. He wasn't drafted and was signed to a contract, so I don't know if it's treated the same way as a rookie contract. Maybe some of the CBA specialists can shed some light?
That's not possible unfortunately. A full MLE deal, which is what most teams will be able to offer him, will definitely be matched by Toronto. Full MLE is the most the Rockets can offer, and that's assuming they can re-sign Landry without using the MLE (tough assumption). Only way the Rockets could get him is via sign-and-trade with Toronto, and I don't think the Raptors are going to trade him instead of T.J. Ford. I'm guessing Ford will be traded. As for Calderon -- 52% shooting, almost 43% from long range, 91% from the stripe to go with 8.3 assists a game in just 30 minutes a night -- and he's just a couple of years younger than the age of our core (turns 27 in September). Drools. One thing though -- he hasn't taken a ton of NBA three-pointers. For example, Rafer took 407 threes this year alone (an unbelievable 529 last year) ... Calderon has only taken 302 in his career. Playing next to T-Mac his assists would go down and the Rockets would likely lose some defensively, but oh my would the gain in offensive efficiency be tremendous. Unfortunately just a fantasy for the Rockets though.
We have a better chance of getting Tim Duncan and hopping in a time machine and getting Jordan from 96 to come off our bench.
I think that is decided by Calderon himself. If he decides to leave for the rockets. No one can stop him!
He's a restricted free agent, so if you're talking this year, the Raptors can stop him. Calderon can only sign an offer sheet with the Rockets, and Toronto has like 14 days I think to match it. Any offer sheet that the Rockets could sign him to would be almost assuredly be matched by Toronto since it would be very cheap for his numbers.
Calderon can tell them he will only sign one year with the raptors if they don't let him go, and then the raptors will lose him for nothing next year. I don't think the raptors can afford that. In fact, there are a lot of Ford supporters in Toronto, including some coach staff. Otherwise, Ford wouldn't be the starter after he came back from injury. I think they prepare to lose Calderon and want some good players back. In fact, Calderon himself knows this, otherwise, he wouldn't write that blog.
Ford or Calderon. We should pursue both very aggressively. This is no knock against Rafer because I'm okay with him being the starting pg next year but if we get either Ford or Calderon and not give up too much.... not only would be set for many years at the position I think they are a key piece to the puzzle.
One thing that I am not sure is that whether Calderon will choose the rockets if both the lakers and the rockets give him an offer.
TJ Ford needs to shoot. He's more of a combo guard than a pure PG. AND WE NEED A PURE PG. He has a slightly more offensive edge than Rafer but 2x expensive. Raptors should keept TJ Ford rather than Calderon, otherwise they wouldn't have any aggressive scorers on their team (yes, that's including Bosh). Their whole team is compromised of a bunch of softies, save TJ Ford and Anthony Parker. On the other hand Calderon is a great facilitator and a smart, selective shottaker - perfect for our Rockets team which has so many offensive weapons. Calderon dishing it to Yao, T-mac, Landry, Scola even Battier would be very sweet. Plus, he can make the open shot more often than all of our current PGs. If Morey can snag Calderon somehow, I'll build a shrine to worship him.
If he wants out of Toronto though, couldn't he sign a one year MLE deal that is matched by Toronto? Forcing their hand? In other words he would basically be saying "I am leaving next year as an UFA, better get something for me while you can". DD
Like I was saying in the thread in the Dish, it would have to be an offer that they couldn't refuse. Calderon is a near perfect fit for this team. What is that worth? I think a lot. Battier, Landry, Scola, Brooks, Head, Hayes, the #25, Jackson's expiring, future picks, cash and taking on Kapono's contract are all things the Rockets could offer. Is any combination of that enough to make the Raptors bite? I'm not sure.
If I am Calderon, I wont come to Rockets for two sport reasons: a) Rafer is the best PG in practice. Can Calderon win the starting job? not sure. b) TMAC has the ball all the time. what is Calderon going to do? defend? wait for 3s? it must be a boring job.
I would LOVE to have Calderon on this team, but just don't think the Raptors will let him go, through any method, as others have already prognosticated. If Morey DID pull this off, oh my ... But, as Clint Eastwood use to say "A man has got to understand his limitations." I'm setting my hopes on getting Miller and Navarro from Memphis.
Yeah, but the Heat have cap room. Sign Calderon and draft Beasley. Add that to D Wade & Marion and you may just have an Eastern Conference contender. At least, if they offer him enough money his agent will convince him that they are.
Solution to a): Trade away Rafer for a backup C solution to b): With Calderon as the PG, T-mac will not have the ball all the time. Adelman plays to his players' strengths, remember. Calderon will definitely get a big role on the Rockets should he invest his talents here.
tmac only has the ball all he time if you suck and is at first a scorer. rafer has the ball A LOT when he's on the court. he avg 5 assist himself. i'm sure calderon will get 5-6 assists, but his pts will balloon to 15-16.
Calderon > Rafer/Francis TMac will simply stop handling the ball that much if he comes. I'll give us a 10% chance of obtaining Calderon. Some team is gonna flood him with money. Even if he gets offered the "sport" full MLE from Rockets/Lakers, I doubt he will take the Rockets one. Morey just needs to work his magic and his mind manipulation.
