I think if the Dems get back control that's enough. We need to focus on a creating a better America and the country will appreciate that by rewarding the Dems in 2008.

Going after Bush will just tear this country apart more.

    OK, we can do this.

Democrats are against torture. Except for a few Republicans who ultimately caved, the GOP apparently is for torture, and the GOP is pushing a "get out of jail free card," for Bush and his buddies, after they broke the law, including the Geneva Conventions. It seems that the law is just a bother to them, and if they break it, they'll just change the law to protect the lawbreakers. A clear difference between the two political parties.

Wiretapping without a warrant is supposed to be illegal. Democrats believe that should continue to be the case, and that the system Bush and company ignored that allowed wiretapping without a warrant, until a judge approved after the fact, and for national security reasons, was a good compromise. Without the knowledge of Congress, Bush and company just ignored the law, and the GOP leadership pushed through a "get out of jail free card," for Dubya and his buddies. A clear difference between the two political parties.

    Max, pick two more. :)

You point out something that I think should be a big issue, but has managed to stay pretty low on the list of things being used in campaigns going into the elections. That was a horrific piece of legislation, and I would vote against anyone who supported it, regardless of party. Just a huge hit to middle and working class families.

    From the Christian Science Monitor:

Regional impact of the new US bankruptcy law

In the view of Nancy Rapoport, dean of the University of Houston Law Center and a bankruptcy expert, that may be the only part of the law that makes sense. "Fewer people are going to be able to get out of debt under this new bankruptcy law," she says.

The most at risk, she says, will be middle-class families who find themselves in unexpected financial straits, such as losing a job, becoming seriously ill, or going through a divorce. "It will not affect the super-rich who hire lawyers to help them prepare for filing anyway."

Also disproportionately affected by the bill are the poor and minorities, say some, because the cost of filing for bankruptcy is going up significantly.

"Contrary to what the credit institutions think, most people are not crooks," says Mr. Black. "Most people want to repay as much of their debt as they can."

And that may be truer in the South than elsewhere, according to studies showing that these states tend to have higher rates of Chapter 13 filings, which require people to pay back a significantly higher portion of their debt than if they'd filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

I don't personally know a single Democrat who was for it.

Bush deserves prison time and democrats should work on that. If necessary, use "alternative" investigation tactics on Bush, I will be all for it.

I think going after Bush personally will only alienate the moderate Americans who are tired of all this partisan b.s.

Having said that, we should have vigorous investigations of why the Iraq situation is so bad. Is it incompetence or corruption? Or, perhaps the investigation will show that Bush was right all along, NOBODY could've predicted this and that NOBODY could have done a better job (highly doubtful, though).

The Dems have to appoint a well-respected, non-partisan investigative commission that both party can agree on. Perhaps Colin Powell is a good candidate to head that commission.

This commission should not focus on Bush. Just focus on the actual policy mistakes. Let the public draw their own conclusions on who to blame and how to vote in 08.

Collin Powell would be a terrible choice to head a committee investigating the Bush Admin. as he was a principle in that Admin. and it would be a huge conflict of interest for him to investigate something he was part of. If there is to be a commission I would recommend Warren Rudman, Sam Nunn or Sandra Day O'Conner to head it.

Anyway if the Dems retake the House I would hope they don't try to impeach GW Bush as that would further polarize and paralyze the country. While I totally think it was wrong to impeach Clinton in 1998 we had the luxury of a prosperous and peaceful country. Even though IMO Bush has done a terrible job as President we are still in a war with ongoing difficulties. An impeachment process now will only make things harder.

I would also hope that the Dems don't try some sort of Contract for America, although having a unified platform would help them win. What I hope that they would do is return the Fed. government to Constitutional balance between the branches. That alone will do more for the country than any sort of Democratic Contract for America.

How 'bout the Dems filibuster this detainee bill which absolves Bush and company of any crimes related to torure or false imprisonment?

I'm for that as a first step.
