Exactly. Though I think they're probably under a "offseason" deadline because Doc will probably be pissed if this goes into next season. He's told them he's going to leave in free agency after next season. JP is trying to maximize his trade value. His hope was to get a package of players that would include two league ready studs to plug into his roster in order to compete next year when the rest of his team is healthy. They want to cut payroll, but they don't have to dump his salary. The primary goal is to get the best package for him before he leaves.
Not to mention they would probably have to trade Vernon Wells or Alex Rios first, in which case they would probably just extend Halladay with the cash savings. Castro is pretty negated by the fact that they have a catcher at AAA that is highly regarded. The Jays are interested in pitching, and if the GM is being honest, Halladay isn't going anywhere. I thought we had a good enough package, but after looking at it deeper, and seeing the Lee trade, I don't think we do. Astros most attractive offer to the Jays would include: Norris, Lyles, & Seaton.
Which wouldn't be close to enough because those guys won't be ready when he wants them ready. This is why I'm with you, he's not going to get traded. Teams don't like to give up what JP wants; league ready elite pitchers.
I agree with everyone in saying he will probably not get moved and the Stros arent going to get him...100% agree....however the Yanks dont want to give up Joba or Hughes so thats why it hasn't and won't happen there but I agree the Rangers have the talent to do it, they should be the ones pushing for Halladay but does he want to go there? He has a list and must approve any trade before it happens...Pence is not about to get expensive he is still under control for 3-4 more years at a great price and moving Wells or Rios will probably happen regardless as there both not liked much at this point... My point was that a team like the Stros can make a push with lesser talent because they are running out of options and could get backed into a corner and for those who say the deadline is next year remember this right now is where he can get the most because you have him under control for multiple years and rent a players will not get you what he is worth now!
Yes, they are trying to move him now because they get more value. But that's the exact opposite of them having to trade him to the Astros less talented offer. The whole point is to get value - if they are going to get junk from us, they can wait until the offseason or next year's deadline. The last two big trade-deadline pitchers to get traded (Lee and Sabathia) fetched more than what the Astros can offer. They can at least get that much - their "mistake" is trying to get even more. If they settle for those types of deals, they could move him. It's unclear if they will drop the price tomorrow or if they are really willing to hold him.
You don't seem to understand things very well. You are absolutely right that now is the time they can get the most if the market is there for him, but then you say that they should take a lesser prospect package now because he won't be as valuable in the offseason. That is true, but the package types you are talking about can be had in the offseason easily.
I understand perfectly... Jays have basically been selling him to everyone that is on his list looking for a bloackbuster deal that EVERYONE has turned down. The lesser package you meantion is right about what they would get in the offseason MAYBE remember what happened in the Johan Santana situation where the Twins would have gotten more for him at the deadline and waited which cost them not only the prospects the Yanks offered but an even better package by the Mets that they eventually gave up...in other words Yes they may get a similar package in the offseason or maybe not and probably LESS. I know I know Stros aint getting him but still something to ponder!
from MLBtraderumors: Meanwhile, the Angels are prioritizing relievers over starters, Stark reports. One scout says the Angels are after "premium" relievers. They were considering Heath Bell today and inquired about Chad Qualls only to find that the D'Backs aren't likely to move him. valverde to LAA, please.
Looks like the Rangers are going in to steal the prize..smart move express! mlbtraderumorsRT @BNightengale Nolan Ryan just said they actively are seeking Toronto Roy Halladay, but suggested that Holland won't be part of any deal Does he want to go to home run park thats the question?
From the way that the Jays dealt with the Phillies, if Holland won't be part of any deal, the the Rangers aren't getting Halladay. With the way the Jays demanded both Happ and Drabek, as well as several other top quality guys, it would probably take both Holland and Neftali Feliz, as well as one or two others, like maybe Taylor Teagarden or Elvis Andrus.
10:52pm: Sources tell Grant that the Rangers have asked the Jays to pay a significant amount of Halladay's 2009 salary in a potential trade. Ryan confirmed that the team would need ownership approval to make a trade for Halladay http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Yep I figured this would happen, I have feeling it will get done and I wonder what kinda package will land Halladay if Ryan already said no Holland?
I wonder if the Rangers are actually going to do this. Didn't they need to borrow money to cover payroll?
MLBTR [rquoter] 1:04am: Rosenthal and Morosi report that the Blue Jays are asking for Holland, Justin Smoak and two other prospects. [/rquoter]
they're in awful financial condition, as i understand it. the holding company that owns them defaulted on an assload of debt before the season started. they were trying to sell at least a portion of the team last i heard.

They're not going to take a lower package -- he's under contract at a reasonable rate for next year. There's no reason for them to panic.
