Should Speedy Gonzales Cartoons Be Banned from TV?

I agree with that to some extent (and I wasn't trying to say that Mexican-Americans were being too sensitive if they were offended by Speedy Gonzales), but the problem is that being the majority for so long, white people aren't as identified by their race, and that genie can't really be put back into the bottle.

And, because of that, I think people who do call for some stereotypical white character to see how whites would feel would end up disappointed with the results (and those results would be irrelevant regardless).

 

Yeah I understand I was just trying to approximate it as much as possible. Reminds me of those Native American college kids in Colorado who re-named their basketball team the Fighting Whiteys to protest another school using an offensive Native American logo/mascot. They got all kinds of requests to buy their t-shirts and stuff.

As one of two French citizens on this board (that I know of), I'll say for the record that I am not offended by Pepe LaPew. He doesn't have nearly the positive image that Speedy has because he consistently fails in his amorous efforts and seems mostly oblivious to things happening around him. At the same time, the racial implications aren't as serious as alleging drunkeness or laziness. Even so, I don't consider it to be a reflection of the French culture to be taken seriously. I would guess Mexicans must feel much the same way -- plus, they have to like that Speedy always wins.

In any case, if CN doesn't want to show it, that's fine. But, I think copies on DVD should be available for people who want it.

i hear there's this cartoon where they have a balding white guy who portrays white people as lazy, uncaring and negligent at the worksite, and bad fathers, a white son who portrays white boys as pranksters, troublemakers, bad students, and foul-mouthed, and even a white cop who portrays all white cops as moronic and unconcered with public safety. oh, and i hear white people love it. i really hope they pull it off the air before they do any damage and hurt our culture.

Back in the olden days, there were things made about that point in time, however, now, they are politically incorrect and down right offensive...

I'm hispanic and remember Speedy, but even at a young age, I found it funny, but stereotypical...Hell, I remember the "Mexican jokes" in the 80's, which you wouldn't hear today...However, do I think it should be banned, probably not...

With so many diverse backgrounds and opinions, you will never be able to please everyone...
