I find the shot quality metrics to be really interesting, although the fact that the Rockets were so bad this year probably means we should take them with a pretty big grain of salt. There's a ton of garbage time minutes included in that sample, and I highly doubt that any coach was going to devote any time to scheming how to actually beat Houston on a nightly basis. You don't need adjustments to beat a 20-win team; roll the ball out there, try not to get hurt, and let them beat themselves. I also think that Silas doesn't get enough credit for navigating the Christian Wood and KPJ walk-outs. They got suspended, and then came back to play even better ball for the rest of the year. A lot of people want to blame him that the team is undisciplined, but it's a young team that loses a bunch. You can't be a dictator when you're losing, because people only put up with that kind of approach when you're getting results; the kids are going to tune him out or quit entirely. Silas has shown the skillset to at least keep his guys focused and aligned in tough times. Obviously, he also needs to show that he can translate that into wins, and that he can manage the egos and demands of established veteran stars. Speaking of not jiving well with superstars, the discourse around Silas actually mirrors a lot of what I remember reading about Kenny Atkinson when he was brought in to coach the Nets; an old article is attached below. With absolutely no talent, and no draft picks, he nevertheless put them in positions to succeed that were visible in how they played, even if they were outgunned for most of his tenure. I thought he got a raw deal in Brooklyn, and I sincerely hope he doesn't take the Lakers job, which is shaping up to be a similar trainwreck for whomever is hired.
I think we're going to see quite a bit of improvement year over year .... there's some talent on this roster now that he just didn't have in year one or two. That 2020/21 roster post Harden trade was one of the worst in the history of the league and those dudes played hard .... to the last game. This season wasn't a whole lot different, asking 3 Rookies to contribute and the way Green started the season things really looked bleak. I thought the offense was well designed and even with KPJ running the show they were able to score enough that they were in most games. We expected them to struggle defensively with such a young team. They had 9 players on that roster that were in year one or two. That's insane .... and just about every one of them improved over the course of the season. That's a credit to Silas. I can't wait for next season to begin, If the draft falls right, I could see them being close to .500 .... and at worst I'm expecting 32ish wins. I don't think that's enough to satisfy the pissers and moaners but it's a huge improvement over last year.
Only taken Silas 3 offseasons to figure out DEFENSE MATTERS. *sigh* Young players struggle with defense unless they already come in with the mindset and skillset. Draft/acquire defenders, defense improves. Simple.
Excuse cannot fly any more, Rockets adding at least 3 more young players this season too. Silas must adapt, or Stone must change rebuild strategy.
If they dont make a actual improvement this year. He going to be chopped for sure. If Banchero + Green doesnt get you in 30 win range. Then you need a new coach.
That's the thing. Banchero + Green + Sengun won't get you where you want to go. Smith + Green/Sengun or Chet + Green/Sengun does imo. But, also imo, a Green + Sochan + Eason +Sengun gets you to the playoffs in their 1st season together.
Another person on this board who has a loser’s mentality. Some of us don’t get excited with back to back worst seasons in the NBA. We expect a bit more from a team run by a billionaire. I’m sure you’ll be celebrating another wasted 20 win season from your wonderful head coach this year. People like you relish teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates….always just a few years away.
Silas has really only had 1 and a half seasons with a young team. He came here to coach Wussel and Hardhead. But they left almost immediately. So no he should not be in the hot seat. Now if they are still playing this tank nonsense in year 3 then yes, he should be in the hot seat.
Sit down kid and shut your mouth. I was actually around for both the championship years and the dark ages that follow. Unlike you, I understand that you have to suck some to win again.
Yeah, because some of us have more than a single brain cell and aren't a waste of this planet's resources.
