I have no problem with the tactic being used for or against us. But on average I bet it typically doesn't work out, so I wouldn't try it unless it seems obvious he's having a bad day at the line.
It was pretty funny. Carlisle was basically punked and backed out by not hacking again for the rest of the game, didn't expect that.
Sometimes, I think Morey and McHale get their ideas from Clutchfans. Not saying it's a bad thing. I think someone started a thread "How can we get Harden?" before we got Harden. Strategic use of hack-a-Rondo? Perfectly implemented in this game. It was not used to win the game, but yeah, by sending a message to the NBA.
I'm honestly not sure that we want to hack-a-Rondo because he's really not that good. I'd hate to see Carlisle take Rondo out of the game for Barea. Mavs are better without Rondo on the court. Leaving Rondo open the whole series will be a great coaching decision that I think McHale is going to make. He sure had his guys play off Rondo tonight.
Dallas would've gone to the hack-a-Joey. This is probably the main reason why he got zero minutes. Capela is actually about a 60% shooter going back to d-league, so Dallas would be dumb to hack him purposefully.
Another reason not to hack Rondo is because the Rockets offense is best in transition. Hacking eliminates transition buckets. It's really not a good strategy for the Rockets to employ other than maybe once or twice just to send a message.
What a baller move to hack Rondo in retaliation after hack a Smith. The fact that the Rockets had one to give and then after the hack do not foul sent a message, "Hey let's play ball." Worked to perfection. Of course this had something to do with it...
I don't know man, it was bad play by McHale IMHO. At first I was pumped up but when it turned out it only was 4th team foul I was like WTF. Especially when they didn't hack Rondo after that... What this did was simply put Rockets in the bonus which is not a good thing when you are leading. Thank god this wasn't a close game, I just can't trust McHale and this play proved it one more time.
My reasoning for saying yes is purely because it ALSO would take the Mavs out of their offensive gameplan. No 3's, no 2's, NO momentum, so if they start hacking us, we hack right back.. THEN more than likely it just evens out in the end. I would LOVE to kill their momentum with their own strategy. More than likely it would only happen that one game if it came down to it, because it would be so ridiculous and not amount to anything more than wasted time when the teams could've been actually playing basketball vs one another. Howard is shooting better. Capela is hitting about 50% now...? Dorsey isn't even in. Smith... well, he has his off and on nights, last night was off.
did Carlisle pull Rondo after that? No, maybe he just stopped hacking. I think it was a "we'll do this, you see" type move, but yeh poorly timed. Why give up a foul if you're not in the penalty? STILL, wtvr it was stopped the hacking and we stayed in control.
