the more interesting aspect is why Jimmy apologized

it's the same reason there are no Chinese villains in movies

your poll is dumb as the choices don't even reflect 50% of the views on this thread.

I watched skit when it aired. Was thinking to myself and wondering about the homelife of the child. Why would a child think like that? Futuristic bully? Or even worse, a killer? Then I wondered if the random answers were not so random. Maybe rehearsed? I dont know. Don't think Jimmy should be fired. Comedians are always pushing the envelope. He and ABC apologized. Life goes on.

or let's say a major Chinese TV station air something similar, eg in a comedy show when asked about how to ensure that America will honor its 1.3 trillion debt to China, a Chinese kid says kill all Americans and take over all our possessions........ I doubt any American will find this funny and most will find it extremely offensive.

If it was a kid, I would find it funny, and not offensive.
I have kids and you know what ?
They don't have filters. It's cute.

Do these jokes involve proposing those groups genocide?

Chinese is a nationality and an ethnicity. Not sure what being a minority has to do with anything but there are 55 ethnic minorities in China if that magically changes the morals you apply.

Who cares, it's just Asians. We already actively make sure less of them make it to universities, a few genocide jokes here and there won't hurt.

"Kill everyone in Israel" or "Kill everyone in Africa" would never have made it out of the production room.

CometsWin has the tendency to pick and choose what he feels is racism.

Unsurprisingly, his examples of racism tend to be geared towards the issues African Americans deal with daily (such as job discrimination, or "black" sounding names on resumes, etc etc,) but he doesn't consider other "social" aspects of racism and discrimination such as caricatures and portrayals of another race, or other subtle forms of racism such as what has happened here, which wouldn't stand if it were about African Americans, thus a double standard exists. He devalues the significance of this subtle racism by effectively saying "Can't you just take a joke??" because he refuses to look beyond what's on the surface and see that underlying racism exists in what has transpired here.

But when it comes to African American issues, such as jobs, etc.. He is very quick to point out the subtle forces in place that tend to encourage certain unfair practices and repeated outcomes for African Americans. He is saying jobs and livelihood and the vicious cycle they create for future generations are far more important than "jokes". Because jokes are just jokes in his opinion.

I think TV's should be outlawed as a result of this international incident. I'm writing a letter to Obama right now.

In 1993, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (
NTIA) released a report titled “The Role of Telecommunications in Hate
Crimes.” This report gave one of the first definitions by government on
hate speech. According to NTIA hate speech is:
    • Speech that advocates or encourages violent acts or crimes of
    hate.
    • Speech that creates a climate of hate or prejudice, which may in
turn foster the commission of hate crimes.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech#Societal_Implementatio

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display
which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action
against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or
intimidates a protected individual or group. The law may identify a
protected individual or a protected group by certain characteristics.

As main stream media, ABC must be responsible for the contents it broadcasts, which are regulated by Federal Communication Commission.

No, you'll not be able to because tonight I'll come to your house and strangle the **** out of you because you are of an inferior race and the burden of the society.

    How's that sound?

Lol. This board is littered with my complaints towards comedians doing skits about "the blacks". You got me man.

No I don't consider comedians making fun of people equivalent to denying them opportunity and equality. Unlike China, we have the freedom of speech and that includes jokes. Tell all the jokes you want kid. When Asians are getting the **** beat out of them by the cops or being denied job interviews or paying higher interest rates because they're Asian then you'll have my full support. Until then you can keep whining behind your computer screens about how horrible "the Asians" have it and I'll keep asking for the evidence.

The amusing part about all of this is that Jimmy Kimmel has this buffoon character on his show, the security guard, that is an incredibly insulting caricature of Latinos and I am Latino. Fortunately I'm mature enough to understand it is comedy and entertainment and have yet to initiate any lawsuits or boycotts.

In all fairness, it wasn't even racially motivated. If anything, it's about killing your creditors. The fact that said creditors are Chinese is a coincidence. If we owed all that money to the British, that kid would have said to kill the British. Kimmel would have said "we did that in the 1700s." Everybody would be laughing.

The fact that people are trying to turn this into a racial issue is just stupid.

Good luck convincing anyone that mocking a bunch of kids saying we should kill all Chinese people is hate speech.
