    I use mine all the time. I am currently using it as my computer while I am in China. If need be, I can log in to both my work PC desktop and home IMac. YouTube videos are just fine contrary to what one poster wrote.

    For you, my concern would be online homework. If it involves Flash, then it would be a problem.

    If the choice is between a functioning laptop that you need and an Ipad, go for the functional laptop.

    If you are asking because you have $600 burning a hole in your pocket and you don't NEED it, but simply want it because its a cool toy and you can afford it with no problem...go for it.

    The number doesn't mean anything- the hardware is custom silicon for running the OS, so stuff is faster on the iPad.

    Think of it like an xBox- you can look up the processor speed and compare it to a computer, but an xBox is going to run a particular game much, much better than a computer with comparable hardware specs.

    Regarding the original question- all depends on your usage scenario- is high portability important to you? I know a lot of grad students for whom it is worth it just for the fact that you can carry around all your PDF papers and easily read them anywhere during downtime. If you've got a "killer" functionality like that it could easily be more than worth it.

    Different situations have different best items- personally, I go for desktop+iphone, other people go for laptop+iphone, others desktop+ipad. All depends on how you live.

    The Slate is being targeted at corporate/IT types from what I recall and the Courier was, sadly, cancelled.

    For my needs, a tablet is useless at this price point. No idea if it would appeal to you or not.

    Couldn't you just buy an iPod touch for a lot less money? Spend the same and get a netbook with a lot more functionality? Get a comparable tablet that is probably better and cheaper?
