I don't think that is quite the same, those symbols represent the people and their ideals. When the leaders change those symbols remain. The cult is the ideology not the man. The dream of a united, democratic Iraq is fading fast. I say we need to split it in three parts (Shia,Sunni,Kurd), and cut our losses. Otherwise, I don't see how civil war can be avoided.
