This is a silly thread. The Rockets didn't pick T-Mo in the draft. We made a trade for him. We didn't have a second round pick at all.
k: that was probably an orchestrated deal announced after-the-fact, i.e. Atlanta made the pick for us.
Correct. An orchestrated deal to specifically get TMO. If we were not interested in TMO, we would not have made any deal at all. We felt TMO was a 1st rounder that fell into the 2nd round. That is why we traded a future 1st rounder for him. CD and Rudy liked him and thought Atlanta would be willing make a trade. To say we should have picked somebody else demonstrates lack of understanding of the situation.
k: Maybe they are saying that we could have traded for the 34th pick and not OVERPAID as no one considered Earl Watson to be a first-round talent!!!!
Ok. One more time. Rocks wanted TMo. If we didn't get TMo, we would have kept our 2002 pick. We were not presurred to make a move. With your line of reasoning, we could play this game every offseason. Afterall, we could trade a future 1st round pick for a 2nd rounder every year, if we wanted. Rudy and CD wanted TMo so they made it happen. They didn't want Earl Watson. It's fun to think about "Coulda Woulda" but it is silly in this case. If we didn't trade for TMo, then we would have nobody until 2002 and we wouldn't be talking about this. This conversation isn't interesting until we find out what # pick we HAD in 2002 and who WAS available at that spot. Will the 2002 1st round pick be better than TMo? It's a little early to tell.
