I believe that casino gambling in Galveston is the only thing that will allow the island to be economically viable over the long term.
Gambling is in Galveston's blood. My parents went with their friends to the Balinese Room and had a fantastic time doing it, going by the tales I heard. I wouldn't have a problem with it if it were tastefully done. Maybe this time they won't have to flip the tables upside down because of a raid!
I don't think the religious people represented by the State government of Texas would ever allow it. It's certainly always been a non-starter before. But Galveston is effed up man. It's really bad and since no one had flood insurance in town I don't think as a town it will ever be near the same. Oh, the hotels, most of the Strand and the Moody stuff will be fine but the town is a fetid pit.
You would think Texas would see all that money flowing into Louisiana every year and want its share. Lake Charles gambling exists almost completely for Texas gamblers driving over. I would think as long as you could keep it to strict areas (like only on Galveston Island) and you could have good regulation it would be a boon for local and state tax revenues.

you texans have fun fighting through your teeth to get a reasonable casino. Texas won't have one for 25-50 years, and you can take that to the bank. Louisiana prevails as the mini Vegas of the South and only is going to get better as all the casino's here are going more resort, building better and better golf courses and already has prime spots for people wanting to just get away. Also good luck getting a drink after serving time such a shame that all those drinkers are there to gamble their drunkness away but can't get a beer or any drink and just bounce out resulting in casino's losing millions upon millions and forcing closure. good luck.
We are lucky here in Texas to have our Baptist overlords to save us from our vices. We'd be penniless drunks if left to our own devices.
Jobs are being lost left and right down there. People are getting hassled by the insurance companies. Local business' are barely holding up, but I don't know how much that will last in the long run. Galveston really needs this, but unfortunately it's not going to happen.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Should the Legislature allow casino gaming on Galveston island, there will almost immediately be a plush casino going up. Tillman Fertitta (sp?) purchased the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas for this very purpose. To learn how to run a casino, and to satisfy the common requirement that anybody getting a license must have operated a legal casino elsewhere for 3 to 5 years (depending on the state).
Lousiana will go bankrupt if Galveston is allowed to do casinos. I seriously doubt these Lousiana casino lobbiests will let that from happening in TX.
