    Probably - but if they are taking down traitorous statues, they shouldn't be punished by much.

    Confederate statues are of traitors, they lost, you don't see a lot of Hitler statues in Germany for a reason.

    He wasn't the worst of the Confederates in that he accepted defeat and tried to move forward, unlike most of the South. And Lincoln asked him to be the Commander of the US Army.

    As I understand it, they melted it first and will pick an artist to make something new after. As the winning artist, I'd have wanted to be able to set the vision before it got melted down. There may have been some artistic options in using intact pieces. But whatever.
