Yeah, you also break down a lot of muscle tissue doing HIIT on an empty stomach, so you'll have less fat, but your muscle definition will look weird. lol
I coached swimming for many years (and was a nationally ranked swimmer at my peak), one thing I told them was before a workout or meet, you should be a little hungry. Eat something light an hour or so before (yogart, fruit, etc). Working out on a completly empty stomach will cause you to get tired more quickly, and I believe reduces your bodys ability to burn fat. I don't remember exactly how it works, but I believe your body will burn more muscle on an empty stomach than if you have a little food in you which will burn more fat. But don't eat too much, you'll get sluggish and cramp up quickly! I made that mistake the other day when trying to run 3 miles, only made it 1 before I started cramping.
I do this 3 times a week (and lift weights the other 4 days a week)... i've gotten to a point where i can eat pretty much whatever i want now (and i'm over 30 and have always had a slow metabolism) and the fat stays off. HIIT works wonders. I swear by it.
Yeah, I usually have 2 bananas and a protein drink before doing my core workouts and HIIT training... I've done it on an empty stomach, but it is REALLY difficult for me to make it all the way through.
I'm no expert, but I don't think that would be considered HIIT, if you're down to 3.5 mph for 1-2 minutes, your heart rate decreases severely. I do 40 seconds at 12mph then 30 seconds at 6MPH. I do 16 sets of these... this is sandwiched between a 5 minute warm-up at 6MPH and a 5 minute cool down at 6MPH
If you want HIIT, try the Insanity workout. This is by far the hardest workout I've ever done (8 days to go), and even though I hate every minute of it, I love the results. http://www.extremefitnessresults.com/insanity.html
It's from the same company, Beachbody. Although I haven't tried P90X myself, I have several friends who have tried both and say Insanity is much harder because it is basically all cardio & jumping. I prefer Insanity because you don't need any equipment, and it's 60 days rather than 90.
Interesting... the thing keeping me from trying P90X for the last year was the up front cost for the equipment... If this doesn't need any, I may need to check it out. I love pushing my body to see how much I can handle physically.
I'm currently doing the P90x workout right now. Today will be day 22. Never thought I would enjoy doing Yoga. lol
P90x is the answer, you only need few equipments, but if you want just want to burn crazy calories and get ripped, Insanity is the way to go, or even if you want to go all out, I suggest mixing them two together, it's the craziest thing I ever done but, results city
There is a bonus upper body workout which requires dumbbells, but it's not part of the regular workout schedule. In all the other workouts, you build muscle by doing good old-fashioned push-ups, and the jumping really bulks up your quads. No matter how many times you do it, you're always pushing yourself to do better, and before your halfway done, you're already dripping with sweat. Even the people in the video can't go through the whole thing without taking extra breaks. I hope you decide to try it out. Good luck!
The one thing that really stopped me from doing P90X was the pull-up bar. I have one in my doorway, but that seems like a bother to have to go back and forth between rooms. I thought about mixing Insanity and P90X, but I'm too scared for that . If anything, I'll probably wait a week or two and then just do another round of Insanity.
One more thing, Insanity workouts are shorter than P90X (those who have done P90X, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I've heard). In month 1, they're about 40 min, and in month 2, they're about 55 min.
Do you know what 8.2% is? That's ronny's body fat. This is not achieved without a rigorous workout program and attention to detail. You need to ask him. I think we know his answer.
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm pretty sold on HIIT. Especially since it's short enough to fit into my willpower. Now the question becomes how I should go about it? To preface: I'm not looking to get ripped. I just want to steadily lower my weight and be more healthy in general. And as someone who has suspect willpower, preferably a routine that doesn't kill him after a week. So about HIIT, I'm assuming it's best to do it on a treadmill? If so, what's the best intervals to use on a treadmill? And also, how do I know when I've reached my own max? I'm kind of afraid I go over my own limit somehow. Thanks for the help.
That's why I like doing a workout video. They figure out all that stuff for you so you don't have to keep track of it yourself.
