The width is important but so is the locations of exits but also depending on the occupancy and occupant load multiple exits are required to be no less than halfway of the diagonal distance of the building. Also some codes proscribe a minimum travel distance to reaching an exit. IN the case of a theatre you couldn't just have one massive opening at one end of the theatre.
Now we've got reports about him having help pulling this off too. Cops killing him, unless absolutely necessary, would severely hinder the ability to track down anybody who helped him. Such a stupid line of thought.
Obviously everything about this is disturbing, but i hate the fact that people do this and then just stop and basically say "take me in i'm done now".......cowards in every sense of the word. Medical students ending lives. On purpose.

If someone got up and went out through the emergency exit, how do we know it wasn't him in street clothes? He could have been sitting there, checked out the theater to go over his "plan" one more time, walked out through the exit, changed clothes and grabbed his guns, and come back in.
