When i first heard the prices offered to the other providers this stopped making sense to me. I said they cant be salling over this, its chump change in the grand scheme
Not a tv expert, but I have a hard time believing it takes $100 million to capitalize a cable tv station. I suspect most of that money was sucked out in fees - anyone know the answer to this?
It has to be the astros and rockets payments. thats what is so screwy, they pay themselves. the station is responsible for broadcasting fees. the providers just provide the medium
Your numbers are way off. CSN-H is asking for $3.50 per month - or $42/yr. Assuming your half million customers, that would cost $21 million. To carry a network that's generating negligent viewers.
Direct tv charges 100 a month for 200 stations in general. that is $.50 a month $6 a year. those have to be per year numbers
Yes. And every station doesn't cost the same. DirecTV isn't paying the same for ESPN as it does for the Oprah Network. That's the whole crux of the dispute - CSN-H wants way more than it's worth. ESPN, for example, gets about $5/month. Other minor stations probably get pennies at best.
This is hilarious. They don't want $3.50 per Houston subscriber, they want per subscriber in the range. It's more than 500k and it's way more than $5 million in total. Major is right.
Probably already posted Jim Crane: Astros will fight bankruptcy case against ComcastSportsNet Houston
Ugh... total gridlock. At least they basically admitted that they were likely the ones holding things up. Crane said the company rule requiring unanimous decisions on major issues, including affiliation agreements, was necessary because “otherwise w would have been outvoted and would have been down the road with a bad deal for the Astros.” Kibbe said the team “would be stuck in a 20-year deal that would put us in a situation to have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball.” Not really sure how they could get an even LOWER payroll than they already have. They just fielded one of the LOWEST payrolls of the modern era.
I don't doubt that a subpar deal would lead to a low payroll, but it's hard to blame anyone except Crane for that. If you can't finance even an average payroll without one of the league's most lucrative TV deals, then you really shouldn't buy a team in the first place.
Agreed. His comments reek of desperation for this to work... if it doesn't, he's screwed. Should never have been approved as an owner.
If its that much i understand the other providers position as they are on the hook for foxsports still
Exactly. Here's a graph that's about a year old now, but generally accurate. Sports stations tend to go a little higher on a regional basis - it's one of the last areas where live tv still works. but yeah, CSNH is out of their minds...
