I agree with mom and pop places having the best kolaches. I mean just the other day I stopped off at Bucees and man those were really good Kolaches. There is some kind of kolach stand on Broadway near the beltway in Pearland that has great ones. Shipleys are good but they tend to be too well done if that makes sense. Not really all that soft.
Oh man I try to get as many people to go there as possible. Unreal how clean the rest rooms are. Every fountain drink you can imagine Dr. pepper icees Great food great fudge dippin dots Me Like the mini UT section hey got there.
The Shipley's on North Main just west of I-45 is 24 hours IIRC. My grandma lived right there off Walton... hence my lifetime weight issues. A dozen fresh, hot, plain glazed at 10 PM on the way home from grandma's house was a common occurrence... and a pint of chocolate milk. Of course we'd get another dozen of 4-Cream Filled, 4-Chocolate Filled, 4-Chocolate Cream Filled. Bad, bad habit. In fact, after every Rockets or Oilers, Astros games or Rodeo and even last year, the Texans game... we'd drop by the old North Main location. I have yet to see that place without at least one HPD squad car there, and usually the officer is back behind the counter drinking some coffee. So stereotypical. But at least I felt safe in there.
I passed by 45 and airline and soooo wanted to stop. I hate always being 2 minutes late in my trek to work.
So I went to the one on North Main and 45 store. Sadly they do not have Big Earls there but I did find out some interesting facts. Shipley owned stores and a few franchise ones have Big Earls. N. Main is a franchise. So they don't have them. However, they don't use Shipley’s recipe for their kolaches. They buy kolache mix so they are softer and more bread like. I had two today and they were good. However they were so hot I burned my tongue and lip on the cheese from it. She said Shipley’s owned stores use the same donut mix they use in the donuts to make the kolaches and she doesn't do it because they get too hard.
My last post in this thread. I tried the Big Earl's kolache today. It was disappointing. First ti s almost twice the price of the regular one and it is not nay bigger. Two that meat almost tastes odd in it. I mean it was okay and if they were in a box at work I would have two of them but I would rather just order the regular sausage and cheese ones from Shipley's.
YOU LIED TO ME YOU b*stard!!!! Seriously, I was so upset when I get there at midnight and they weren't selling donuts.......or crack. They close at 11.
I've posted this before, I worked at the bank where shipley's does its banking. they're a different breed. won't go into to many details, I actually never met any of them formerly, the grandson runs the show now. his father is very secretive. but you couldn't have krispy kreme in the bank. that was a serious no-no
