in my experience, shipley's are tops. kolache factory is good, but there's something about shipley's sausage and cheese (and sometimes jalapeno) that just rock. this new "Earl Kolache" intrigues me greatly and i shall be procuring one very soon, i do believe.
I think each location tends to vary a little bit in terms of quality. The one on Airport and 45 south has the best kolaches consistently for my money. I think the donuts are all pretty consistent, although the location in Baytown on Garth road used to have the best chocolate glazed, but it's been probably 5 years since I've been out there so that may not be true anymore.
I remember when everyone jocked Krispy Kreme. I always thought Shipley's was better. There's nothing like a fresh warm Shipleys glazed donut.
Donuts are not made in an oven, but I agree............Shipley has always been the best. Never could understand all the love for Krispy Kreme.......don't get me wrong, KK's aren't bad--they just aren't as good as Shipley's.
Mom & Pop Shops > * Don't get brainwashed by brand names. Shipley's, Krispy Kreme and Kolache factory aren't the only spots in town and they're definitely not the best. Yall are sleeping on a lots of good donuts and kolaches out there.
BTW--when I say Shipley's are the best, I'm ONLY talking about their plain, glazed donuts. I've had Krispy Kreme's, I've had Southern Maids, I've had mom & pops all over the place. They're all good, but Nothing comes close to a Shipley's. Their dough is perfect.......and so is the glazing. As for Kolaches, that is debatable (with me). One thing is for sure though: Bread dough baked around sausage (or sausage and cheese, or sausage, cheese and jalepeno)--although very tasty--is NOT a Kolache! Just ask a Czech.
I love Shipley donuts. I humbly submit that what they (and y'all) are calling "kolaches" are actually an example of a "klobasnek." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klobasnek Kolaches are generally sweet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolache jus' sayin'
Yeah, but "Klobasnek Factory" really doesn't have the same ring to it as "Kolache Factory"... This is a "kolache" according to wikipedia. Looks kinda like a danish to me.
