I haven't been following this debate and believe me, I'm no Penny fan. But just because he didn't get compared to MJ isn't the be all, end all. He was actually comapred to Magic, but more athletic. And a more athletic Magic more scary than MJ.

Doc R said that Rudy 'orchestrated' the deal, and wanted Butler. He always tried to get LO. He just needs a pair of bigs and only the MLE (or DGeorge) to finagle a deal.

If i'm a Heat fan, I'm not that happy.

I just traded 3 of my favorites, including young talent, for a shot sooner rather than later with a center who has already seen his best days and seems to be becoming more injury prone.

That's exactly what I've been saying about all this. You NEVER trade your entire core (minus Wade) for one injury-prone, childish, past-his-prime center.

Miami shocked everyone last year with their heart and desire in the Pacers series, and they had a real good, young team for the future. But now if/when Shaq goes down (or demands yet another trade once the novelty wears off), Wade is a one man team and suddenly a promising team drops off the map.

Stupid move by the Heat for the long term.

I'm not sure what to think...I believe the Heat will be good, but to get those three and a pick for Shaq isn't bad...Again, this is winning now, not later mentality and I like Butler a lot...

Now, does that make the heat a contender, no, but they'll get into the playoffs, oh wait, didn't hey do that last year w/o shaq...

i think this hits it on the head. if you have a chance to be a contender...title contender...immediately, then you might be willing to give up all these parts of a team that played with heart and fire the season before in the playoffs and down the stretch of the regular season.

but i don't think this makes the heat into title contenders. it makes them better, but for how long? how much does shaq have in the tank??

but look at the van gundy boys landing the two top names on the market!!! wow!!! :D

I don't think they have the time to win a title. It took Kobe (better than Wade) and a much stronger Shaq three years to get the first ring.

Well, poopie. We here in Dallas wanted to see the big guy come to the Mavs. I guess money isn't everything. Or is it? Perhaps as some have mentioned, Shaq just wanted to be the best center in a conference again. (cue Will Smith: "Welcome To Miami")

LoL shaq rumor doesn't bother me that much, I m so glad this guy goes to east. Can't wait for ALlstars 2005 ;))

One thing really bothers me is Pistons Champion video? commericial?

    [declare]man, i m the Pistons hater[/declare]

Man if the wolves made it to the Finals, piston aint going to win, or aint going to win that easily.

The way Lakers sucked in the final, it's like Shaq or Kobe intentionaly lost the series, just to let Malone not get a ring...trust me, Shaq or Kobe (1 of them) is a big Malone hater

Lamar Odom was also just coming into his own. I can't believe the Heat gave him up. I would have given up Wade, they are both still very young. Odom and Kobe will make a nice tandom.

Odom had to be in the package because of his salary. Wade doesn't contribute much in matching Shaq's $30M, but Odom does.

Count me in as one who thinks Miami is stupid in trading TWO very good young players AND a first rounder for Shaq. Shaq has about 2, at most 3, dominating years left. They are mortgaging their future for a shot now. But a shot for what? Shaq with Kobe and Payton got trashed by Detroit. What makes them think Shaq with what's left with the Heat can be a contender in the East? And Shaq will only get worse, not better.

The only good thing about this trade for Miami is getting rid of Grant's contract. Oh, wait, Shaq's contract is even more atrocious if they plan to re-sign him.

I agree with you that the deal makes the Heat no better than the Lakers of last year, who lost anyway, but why not go for a title in the next 2 or 3 years instead of the unknown 4 to 5 years down the road?

Since when is Caron Butler so special? He had a decent rookie season and has fallen off badly. Grant had a horrible contract and the Heat finally got him out of there. So it essentially comes down to Lamar Odom for Shaq. You're crazy if you don't do that deal. The Heat will sell out all their games, they'll get more TV appearances, and the franchise value just shot up. Plus they're guaranteed a top 3-4 seed as long as Shaq is there.

Meanwhile, the Lakers lost Phil, Shaq, Malone and soon Payton. They have knocked themselves out of title contention until they land a premier big man (which might never happen). Plus I were Kobe, I'd rather play with Brand, Maggette and Livingston than Odom and a bunch of nobodies.

odom has a 15 percent kicker on his contract which means he will get paid 8 or 9 mil more along with his current 55 mil he's owed. Screamin' A. said the deal would still probably get done unless the lakers now feel cheated.
